(we eat the filets not the whole fish)

Yeah, but they're like shelling pecans. More work than they're worth.

oh well I only eat them, I don't go fishing for them. yeah it's quite a lot of work..but not really if you got the hand to cut the filets from the fish it's quite a fast job.

perch = bird food, we throw them on the bank

crappie = good eatin', only spawn in early spring, really only time to catch them unless you're at a private pond

Perch is good eating as well.

If I remember right, we would cut off the head and fins, then slice it in half right along the backbone on both sides. Then, I think we took a spoon or something and scraped off the scales. I don't think we fileted the skin off. But, that has been a looooong time ago.

As far as cooking, we fried it. We fried everything. One big deep fryer, hush puppies, french fries, onion rings, and fish dipped in milk and then corn meal.

almost.. you use a spoon and scale it first.. then you cut the head off and gut it. I only cut off the bottom fin around the asshole..

I also buried the heads in my garden.

that sounds like a big pain in the ass, on top of having to catch 50 just to have a good fry.

Yeah, no shit. You have to have a bunch of those fuckers to get enough to eat. And, their fins are so fucking sharp, and they fan them out as far as they can. When I was a little kid, it was hard to get my hand all the way around them to fold down the fins.

Crappie are about twice the size and you still have to catch a ton of them to have a decent fish fry.

yup, but when crappie are biting (right now) they're easy to hook. i have the secret jig rig to catch 40+ crappie at a time.

What?

My folks used to have a place on a really good fishing lake. I used to go up there with a friend of mine and we would stay out all night fishing for crappie. That lake had a "slot" limit on the size of fish. They had to be at least 10 inches (I think) and no more than 15 inches to keep them. Anything bigger or smaller, you had to throw back. You could keep as many as you caught in the "slot" size.

We'd catch 150 or more (keepers) a night. The bitch was fileting that many fish. But we had electric knives and an outdoor sink setup that made it pretty easy. When you're catching that many fish, you don't spend a whole lot of time fileting them (lots of waste).

ha!

here's a little tip. rig 2 1/16 black head jig heads to your line. here's the tricky part...my father in-law found these white plastic minnows with a balck dot on their back. he bought like 5 lb bulks of these things so he'll never run out. they are magic i tell ya, i've never gone fishing and not hauled in 20+
