Religious Question
#21

Religion isn't real. There is no God, the Bible was written by humans. I believe there could have been a Jesus, but he wasn't the son of God or anything.

awwwwwwww, c'mon UDC, we are all "sons of god"

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

I think people who preach their NON-belief of God SUCK just as much as those who preach their belief of God.

Motherfuck, this is a worn out subject.....

leucetios Wrote:True, we are more accepting of letting others practice their religions now. But the bible wasn't written in modern times, was it? It was written in those times, and since the bible is gods word doesn't that imply that he does feel threatened by those craven images? That they do hold some power?

the bible is a composite work. over 40 different authors worked over a period of 1500 years on it.

by the way the texts into the book are usually a metaphor on some general subject it's not a detailed "how to".

Images and text do have some "power"; I'm sure about that.

I didn't take the time to read the entire thread, but I figured I'd throw some fuel on the fire:

Genesis 3:22
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Who is god talking to in the sence who is "us"?

I don't really pride myself with knowing alot about the bible, but growing up southern baptist, I do. Leu if you want some real interesting reading, find a copy of the Gospel of Thomas, which unlike the other books of the bible we all know, was written within the first 40 years after Christs death, and offers a first hand knowledge of his life and teachings. It's also one of a few known books of the bible that was/were purposely left out by the monks who composed the original version of the bible the catholic, and in a sence all christianity, faith is based upon.

fem Wrote:^bingo^ (to MT's message) also other gods like Buddha, Ala, whatever....they are just a statue. What did they ever do for this world?

are you serious?

first of all, Buddha was a man who attained enlightenment. he is not a god in the same sense as your Christian god.

they are not statues, ststues are merely representations of their true likeness. I have not seen many "Ala" statues myself, but I have seen plenty of Buddha statues.

know what else I've seen? statues that represent god and Jesus. does that make them just statues too?

and if you dont know what kind of things a great man like Buddha did for the world please refrain from making ignorant comments. if you find that at all possible.

MT surprised me in this thread. well not really, I knew he was smart.

snarg speaks wisdom. ( Confusedcratch: )

ntype is also dead on.

BODE concise and to the point as per usual it would seem.

to picture god as some judgemental or loving or even comprehensive being residing in the heavens somewhere watching down on all of us and analyzing the existance of humanity with the same prejudices we use in judging ourselves is ridiculous. it is us simple minded humans that need to put a face and a robe on someone before we can picture them as "real".

do not try to think of god as a person, nor a creator. god is point from which the collective conciousness flows. it is the unknown perfection that is Life's potential.

more often than not people who say "there is no god, religion isnt real" have thought little about the big picture and based their opinion on their hatred of the church and organized religion here on earth.

religion has done little to promote a more spiritual way of life. a lot of us think we are doing better than most people because we go to church on sunday and pray at night and we say that we know god is great and so on. but our connection with the church does not bring us closer to god. if anything it takes us further from it as we take on preconcieved ideas of what someone must do and say and live like to "get into heaven".

and theres something else thats screwed up. this whole notion that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell and thats the way it is for eternity. ludicrous. heaven and hell are merely dynamic parts of the whole. as long as the wheel of samasara turns heaven and hell shall exist in mens minds as they strive to attain perfection.

snarg nows

actually that's not intirely correct. Buddha, as was also Mohamed (along with others) were living walking people such as Jeasus. At technically they were all teachers of appresiation and love. Appresiation for the things they have (ie=enlightenment) and love (understanding, accepting and forgiveness) to all of mankind. In otherwords they were ancient hippies but, I personally would like to think thay all achieved their understanding and insperation for their teachings from the same source. And I'd like to think that source is what we christians have labled "God"
