Religious Question - leucetios - 03-31-2005

For the religious in the group: if there is only one god, why does he bother with the being jealous about other gods?

"Thou shalt have no other god before me" kinda implies that maybe there are other gods...

What that refers to is many different "Gods". It could be money, possesions, etc..

true.. except when moses came down from Mt Sinai and they were all worshipping "false idols" didn't god open a can of whip ass on the craven images and all that? Hard to believe those things had no power if god wanted them destroyed so badly, eh?

Religious Question - fem - 03-31-2005

^bingo^ (to MT's message) also other gods like Buddha, Ala, whatever....they are just a statue. What did they ever do for this world?

see my post in response to MT.

As for the bolded text. IF I don't believe in your god, then the argument goes both ways: what did your god ever do for this world? Nothing, cause everything you could claim he did I could claim some other god did, or science did. And it all boils down to propoganda.

I think that has to do with how non-traditional forms of religion were looked upon. Today we accept peoples beliefs about different religions and accept them. Back then I don't believe it was so.

True, we are more accepting of letting others practice their religions now. But the bible wasn't written in modern times, was it? It was written in those times, and since the bible is gods word doesn't that imply that he does feel threatened by those craven images? That they do hold some power?

The Bible has adopted more modern meanings and terms throughout the years. I don't know if God is threatened or just sends forth a kind of warning that He is the supreme being and there is no use in wasting your time on others.

Or it could just be a bunch of religious idiots who use scare tactics to get their message across.

Ignoring modern times for now. The romans and Zeus, et al, were still around in force around the old testament. So I could see god (or the people who wrote the bible and were trying to kick off their religion) putting the "no other god" clause in, to help stem competition. (The DOJ would have their ass for non-competitive practices today)

But, the problem arises when you think like those people. This new god is saying he is the only one, and he is acting kinda.. jealous.. for lack of a better word about other gods. To me that might reinforce that my gods were real too.

i beg to differ here
men wrote these words
some interpretation was involved, even if "god" spoke thru them
thus the confusion

fair enough, I was making an assumption in that post and trying not to get derailed into this other argument.

Religious Question - Fairiedust - 03-31-2005

The 10 commandments are GODS word the Bible (stories) are written by man...so it's all how you understand it..Catholics teach fear, born agains teach love...go figure...

Religious Question - Fairiedust - 03-31-2005

If Christ/Jesus spoke in the Temples, celebrated the Jewish/Hebrew faith..why have "christians" given up some of the old testatment practices?
