Well think about it. If I went into a cafeteria with 1,000 people in it. And I beat the shit out of 10 or 15 of them. Not killed them or anything, just beat them up really good.
Then later, they catch me and put me on trial for beating up 1,000 people. Like attempted murder on 1,000 people. Then the people in the cafeteria get together and claim they all got beat up. And they get a good lawyer and he goes to all the papers and puts out this story that I was trying to kill everyone there. And the jury buys it and they sentence me to 99 years in prison. This being my first offense, but the severity of the crime on such a large group of people, justifies the sentence.
Then later, the truth comes out and we find out that I didn't beat the shit out of 1,000 people. I only did it to about a dozen. So the judge reexamines the case and determines that I should have probably gotten probation or maybe 2 years max. So he apologizes for it, gives me some restitution for all those years I sat in jail, and a new suit.
