download a real firewall. The XP firewall basically doesn't work well and moreover there were some infos that he could be remotely deactivated upon the reception of a certain sequence (talk about microsoft and their products "features").

Anyhow give a try to some good software out there :

Agnitum really nice there is an antispyware protection as well, doesn't hassle you if you happen to play online games and stuff. The creations of rules (what application can access which cannot) is quite easy (well sometimes they could be trickey but if you are into that chapter it won't annoy you much).
Otherwise you can still use others :
