For Sale: Cisco pix 501 firewall/router/what-cha-ma-call-it/do-hicky.
#1

All bullshit aside, I manage a couple of networks at small local businesses and one place They've got me swaping out a cisco pix 501 router for a newer one. (they want a wireless access point - don't ask, I tried to get them to just buy a cheap wireless access point device) Anyway, they're gonna throw it away, so before I put it up on ebay I figured I'd offer it up here. Anybody interested should drop me a PM.

It's in perfectly good working order and approx 3 years old.
If your not familiar with cisco code, this isn't for you.

ps. I will unstick this in the morning.

hit me with an offer, ebay says anywhere between 150-350

It is firewalled and I'm pretty sure it is for unlimited users, but I've never pushed it past 10 so I'm not 100% certain.

Noooo Stoooopid, it's not, and if someon tries to use it as a router, they are going to be SOL.

Trust the Network Engineer. It's a firewall. It can route traffic through itself, but won't be able to route to other routers dynamically.

BTW, I've configured about 200+.

Please see diagram for correct network design.

It's been routing the internet services into a 2000server network since it was installed. I'll be the first to admit, it's too advanced for me. I only know what it's been doing since I took over. It is configured to work in conjunction with the dsl modem. It's always worked and I know jack about it.

The DSL modem is acting as the router to the external network, and the PIX-501 is probably running VPN to a larger corporate network..............

It's still a firewall. It's not a router. Look up the documentation on cisco.com.

Bill, this is no knock on you, but you have no clue a router does.

The 501 is a security device/firewall. It's protecting the network, and forwarding (not routing) data destined for the internet to the cable modem.

Forwarding data and routing data are not the same thing. you could pretty much have a layer 2 switch sitting in place of the Pix-501, doing the same thing(only it would not be filtering extrernal attacks, which is what a properly configured firewall will do).

You need to change the title of this thread to Cisco Pix 501 Firewall.

This is correct.

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?
