Winners: The Bucks

After trading away No. 4 draft-pick Stephon Marbury last year, the Bucks get it right in '98 by stealing the marketable and talented Robert Traylor from the Mavs for an overhyped foreign prospect.

wow, lots of busts there
how bout some undrafted players from that year?

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

Wildly inconsistent 76ers doing enough to stay in first place

By DAN GELSTON
.c The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chris Webber and Allen Iverson have not only proved they can put up All-Star numbers together, they have the Philadelphia 76ers in first place in the Atlantic Division.

Now if only they can get their teammates more regularly involved in the offense, the Sixers (12-11) might be able to break away from a mediocre pack.

After an offseason of questions surrounding the success of the Iverson-Webber pairing, the duo have quieted the skeptics by combining for at least 50 points in 14 of 23 games. That the Sixers are only 7-7 in those games shows they might need some help.

``When I get my shots, I can do it,'' Webber said. ``This is what I expect of myself. When I have those 12- or 13-point games, nobody goes home more upset than me. I just credit my teammates because it is about your teammates getting you the ball in the right places.''

Some of them couldn't be blamed if they start thinking twice about making that extra pass. Iverson (34 ppg) and Webber (19.4) combined for 53 of the Sixers' 88 shots in their win over Atlanta on Wednesday, and they have combined for 1,029 of the 1,881 shots this year.

``Well, there was never a question in my mind about those guys playing (well) together,'' coach Maurice Cheeks said.

But can they get the other Sixers involved?

No Sixer has been more lost in the shuffle lately than guard Andre Iguodala. The highlight-reel dunker has practically been nonexistent offensively after a strong start, taking no more than five shots in five of the last eight games. Only four times in the last 11 games has he scored in double digits and three of those times were an even 10 points.

``Not everyone can be a hitter, or shooter, or part of an offense every night,'' Cheeks said. ``There are some guys that have to be different things at different times and sometimes Andre is that guy. Certainly, we'd like to put the ball in his hands a little more.''

Sometimes it seems that Iguodala, Kyle Korver and Samuel Dalembert do little more than stand around watching Iverson and Webber shoot, while they get their looks on alley-oops, putbacks or a kicked-out pass for a 3.

Cheeks wants that to change, believing the more players incorporated into the offense, the better the Sixers will be.

``When you see Kyle shooting the ball the way he's capable of shooting the ball, and giving Andre more offensive opportunities, and even Sam, I think we're a more dangerous team that way,'' Cheeks said.

More dangerous and perhaps less likely to blow leads in the fourth quarter. The Sixers have made game after game much more closer than it ever should have been because of their failure to hold leads in the final minutes.

They held on to beat Minnesota in overtime on Monday after wasting a late lead and lost two games to Milwaukee this year that they should have won, blowing a seven-point lead with 3 minutes left in one, and a seven-point lead with 2 minutes left in another.

And while a four-game winning streak going into Friday night's game against Miami is nice, and the six-game one earlier this year was even better, four- and three-game losing skids have made the 76ers perhaps the streakiest team in the league.

No one seems to know why.

``If I knew the answer to that, then I would never lose the games,'' Iverson said. ``I don't know, man. It's basketball. It's the NBA. It's hard.''

Still, the 76ers are in first place and that's one lead they don't want to squander.

Beating the Southeast Division-leading Heat on Friday night with a well-balanced offense might be a good gauge as to where the Sixers stand in the Eastern Conference playoff chase.

``They're one of the better teams in the NBA and you always get pumped up to play them,'' Webber said. ``Hopefully, we'll have the place packed the crowd behind us and we'll be ready to go.''

They also gave up Garrity. ><

For the record, Dirk said he wouldn't play for anyone but Don Nelson.
