well watching a show like american idol and thinking that you are listenning to "artists" is just as going to McDonald hoping to get a real steak.
They are pure products, I mean who will give a flying monkey of the "winner" in well two years (to be optimistic).

You have to look at who is having kids these days. Uneducated people who don't graduate high school will have 5 kids by the time they are 21.... others that wait until after a college degree has 2.... simple math tells you society as a whole is getting dumber (or stupit)

I have never looked at American Idol as a medium that produced serious music or artists. It's a popularity contest, with very little focus on music or artistry.
