The other problem, which I guess is directly related, is that a lot of the good teams are in the South. How can you talk about contracting Atlanta if they're in first place?

I think it's just an odd dynamic/balance of power right now. Even so, the sport definitely got more exposure when games were on ESPN or ESPN2 all the time...it's tough to try to rebuild when you're w/o arguable the biggest media marketing weapon out there.

They tell me hockey used to be popular in Chicago, but in 6 and a half years I haven't paid any attention to it.

That's exactly the problem. Now nobody in Chicago, a huge market, gives a shit about the Blackhawks or the NHL.

A year or so ago. 2.0 and I took Foolery to a Wild vs Blackhawks game at the United Center. The place was about 15-20% full. Simply disappointing. WGN Chicago's own Channel doesn't carry the Blackhawks, I've also heard rumor that the 'A' Sports radio station doesn't really cover them. The majority of the radio coverage is on AM, possibly a country radio station....and they only carry 'select' Blackhawks games.

Yet the Bulls, Bears, Cub and Whitesox get incredible coverage. That sucks Chicago has a rich hockey history.

The biggest piss off I have ever experienced in my love of hockey was the apathy shown when Tampa won the cup in 04. No one cared. An ounce. There were more Calgarians on the streets celebrating Calgary's loss than in Florida celebrating Tampa's win. Didn't matter that it was Calgary in the final. Could have been anyone. Cities where no one cares about hockey should not have teams.

The owner is a first class prick. He won't allow the games to be televised unless the stadium sells out. He was pulling this shit long before the lockout. One of the reasons the Cubs are so popular is because they were on national TV all the time, yet he doesn't see the need for his team to be on even local TV.

That's funny. The CFL (Comedy football league) does that here. I always thought that was the stupidest thing to try and blackmail people into coming to the stadium. Especially in the CFL's case when the product on field is a ridiculous joke.

American football teams all have blackouts when they arent close to sell outs.Doing it for hockey especially a bad team is a stretch.

Saints used to get blacked out from time to time...

Unluckily for me I live outside the blackout circle so I was forced to watch them every week. I learned my lesson and bought direct tv.

:lool:

I hear ya. The fish house is about 3 1/2 hours north of scrappy and they were broadcast on the only channel the portable BW TV would receive.

Totally sucked...cold...too young, Pops wouldn't let me drink...and the vikes would be used to mop up Lambeau, Soldiers,.....:fuckYou:

I don't know when the last Bears game was balcked out, but they'd have to call out the National Guard these days if it happened.

That's what I'm saying, the balance of power has the good teams in cities where no one cares. Fuck, I'm sure more people celebrated in Hartford last year than in Raleigh.

The sport needs to thrive nationally (err, internationally) again first, before it can ever become immensely popular in the south.

It's okay people, I speak Wooly.

Translation from Bostonian to Southern: Until they put spit cups in the arm rests and Ford, Chevy, and Dodge sponsor hockey teams...it ain't never go'n be popular in the Souff.
