Tree Removal Question
#1

Here's my house. See the big Eucalyptus tree in front? It's pulled up the lawn and its roots have grown so much they are threatening all my water lines out to the main.

So I have to have it removed and the stump ground but I'm pissed it's gonna cost like $500. Should I just get like ten different prices and go with the lowest? Should I have all the roots taken out while they're doing it and completely resod the lawn and redo the sprinklers? (more $ crap!)

Options?

$500 doesn't sound like too much if they are going to grind the stump and get most of the roots. There won't be much to resod, I wouldn't think you would spend more than $20 on sod.

How'd you get the name of the guy that gave you the $500 price?

if it were me? I'd have them transplant it somewhere else and put a different tree in it's place....if you have the room of course.

Man, I don't know if you could get under that thing to transplant it. I'll bet the root system is too deep and spread out.

I would recommend planting another tree in its place when it is gone. The front of the house is going to look kind of strange without something there.

Flumper, my next door neighbor to the right has the same house. He just redid his lawn and showed me the roots are growing into the main. He said he had his gardener give him a price to remove it while they were there.

Bill, that tree is huge--there's no transplanting it. I would like to put a new tree there but that more $ (crap!).

I like California Pepper trees. They're pretty, but I don't have a pic of one to show you.

100% correct....hence the suggestion....maybe look at planting a white ash tree....nice shade tree. you can get one cheap from the NADF.

5 Hundies sounds cheap to me too. I'd replace that motherbitch with a Chinese Hackberry.

I think their roots are invasive rat bastards.

When you say the roots are growing into the "main", I wonder what that means. You probably have a 1" service line coming off the water meter to feed your house. That is the "main" feed to your house for water. I doubt the roots would have penetrated that line or you would know it from your water bill.

Now, you also probably have a 4" or 6" sewer service that runs from your house to the sewer line in the street. That line will be a much thinner grade of pvc or maybe even clay pipe. That is the line that generally gets taken over by the roots. If you don't have any sewer problems (backed up lines, slow drains, etc.) then you probably don't have much of a problem. Once the tree is gone, those roots will gradually deteriorate and you shouldn't have a problem. When dealing with utility lines, my theory is if they ain't broke, don't fix them.

Get the tree removed (but call a professional tree remover and get one price to compare to the $500). Be specific, you want the stump ground and the area able to plant another tree. Otherwise, they will only grind down to below the surface, cover with dirt, and leave you with a buried stump.

i landscapedmany yrs in cali

forget about moving it
500 is cheap if they grind the stump

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

Bill, I've bookmarked that site, thank you. Ray, don't their roots grow straight downwards? A few years ago I had a fabulous rock pool built and the landscape guy recommended California Peppers. We planted four of them almost at the pool's edge and there's been so problem so far with them. (I no longer have that house)

To be specific, I guess the roots are about to start making trouble. The neighbor took off the concrete cover at the street to show me the roots growing close to the water lines.

I'll be real specific about the stump grinding, don't worry. I do think another tree needs to go there or it will look too empty.

Snarg, I won't move the existing tree. It's even bigger than it looks in that pic. I found this showing it a little.

It is a fucking Eucalyptus. Those things grow like weeds out here and light up like roman fucking candles in a fire. $500 is WAY too much. I just had 1/3 of an acre cleared, and I had about 15 of those on it. Cost me $900.

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?
