I usually buy only vegetables who got the "fair trade" logos on it (like Max Havelaar). They are a little bit more expensive but spending a few cents for that is quite worthy.
But you're right this is a real trouble.

ps : in Switzerland we produce food too Wink and grapes comes often from Italy or Spain around here

I tell you a true story :

While I was in business school we had a "world economy" simulation. We were about 60 (three country and many different economic aspects of each country and the political one plus teachers playing "world economy"). Anyhow this game was running for a whole semester.

I had the "chance" to produce electronics in a country with high costs like switzerland. At period zero (with given numbers) my prices were three or four times higher than the price on the market.
I made my calculus and understood that even if I wasn't doing any profit my prices where still much higher than the standard ones out there.

The situation was clear since beginning I was screwed up.

Rack the chineses I say for providing cheap labor. Is this something totally cynical ?

Yeah, but believe me you and me aren't ready to pay for the "real" price of electronics manufactured in a "developped country" where you give a real salary to the people. Or you just gonna change your consuming habits and start asking for hardware who really stands the ages.

Do you remember your first cell phone ? I do. A rock solid nokia, since then the usual lifespan of my mobile phones is about one year and I'm not playing football or throwing it against the walls. Well be sure that things wont' go better, as long as you'll find a country happy to build your funny hardware for a dime.

But I'm having errands around here you didn't never really wanted to have some exchange about how the world economy is functionning and the implications on your everiday life.
You're just hoping for some "skinny answer" like "hey nittywanker my electronics is maybe manufactured in China but the whole R&D has been made in Switzerland".

Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter
In a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler
We were poor but we had love
That's the one thing my Daddy made sure of
He shoveled coal to make a poor man's dollar

My daddy worked all night in the Vanlear coal mine
All day long in the field hoein' corn
Mama rocked the babies at night
Read the Bible by a coal oil light
And everthin'would start all over come break of morn'

Daddy loved and raised eight kids on a coal miner's pay
Mama scrubbed our clothes on a washboard ever day
I'd seen her fingers bleed
To complain there was no need She'd smile in Mama's understanding way

In the summertime we didn't have shoes to wear
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand new pair
From a mail order catalog, money made by sellin' hogs
Daddy always got the money somewhere

I'm proud to be a coal miner's daughter
I remember well, the well where I drew water
The work we done was hard
At night we'd sleep 'cause we were tired
I never thought to leave Butcher Holler

Well a lot of things have changed since way back when
And it's so good to be back home again
Not much left but the floor
Nothing lives here anymore
Only a memory of a coal miner's daughter
