I can tell you what they are NOT. Maybe we can use the process of elimination.

Here is a simplified, and serious, answer:

Morals are a socially, and culturally instilled sense of the norm, that helps any given society maintain its structure and helps prevent it from falling into complete chaos.

and actually moral, depending on where you live (sup Hollywood?).

Question for the E. Do cats have morals? Or standards, for that matter?

apparently not

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

Different strokes for different folks would definitely apply here. I have always thought of having moral values as having the ability to choose the right out of the many wrongs that life throws at ya. The differences lie however in what someone thinks is right and wrong. My moral values are based on the standard judeo christian values. Although I sin against them often as I am imperfect. I was given my moral values by my parents through love and at times discipline. Being the fact that most christian values are removed or being removed from society as time progresses, you will see the moral decline of this country increase exponentially.

I agree that traditional judeo/christian morals are slowly losing their place, but that doesn't mean that there will be a moral decline, necessarily. It is a simple method of change. Slavery was moral was one time (treatment of slaves notwithstanding), and that moral was lost, being replaced with one that says you can't own another human.

Times change, and since morals reflect the society, the so too must morals change with the times.

.. if everyone followed these rules, there would a hell of alot of pedofiles running rampant in the streets though. A bunch of hypocrisy if you ask me.

Well of course it does being the fact that the basic premise of what is right and what is wrong is derived from those principles. Although I would agree with you that the evolution of certain moral standards has happened and will continue to happen to a certain degree. If you remove the basic principles of what is right and wrong from a society however, moral decline is bound to ensue.

By judeo/christian values I am basically saying the ten commandments. Where on earth you ever got pedophilia out of the ten commandents is beyond me. I would agree on the hypocrisy part though.
