Thanks littlelolly. He's been going to a support group since November for kids who have lost a parent and just started one-on-one counseling last week (earliest we could get him in). We didn't qualify for any assistance (they say we make too much) on legal bills or therapy. We already had custody of him (went through a custody battle from Feb 2009 through Sept 2009) and the court again decided that he should remain with us and a month later she overdosed. This time I think we shelled out a little over $4K. The one good thing is that he does qualify for social security survivor benefits and so we've started a fund for him. In all honesty, and as bad as this sounds, that's probably the best thing she's ever done for him (the soc. sec. benefits).

Good for you on the support group. Knowing he's not the only seven year-old on the planet who's going through this might help. I agree with you on the Social Security thing, and it doesn't sound bad at all. On the bright side, you should be able to write some of this off...?

Dear Prudence:
Recently, our front yard was the site of a tragedy when a young driver on his way home from a celebration crashed his car into our tree. I was unable to free him from the car and spoke to him as he died waiting for an ambulance. Since then, his family and friends have made our yard into a memorial site: flowers, teddy bears, signs posted on the tree. I have seen similar displays along highways and public thoroughfares and wonder when is the appropriate time for me to remove it? Is there a protocol that should govern my timing? I would hate for this young man's family (whom we do not know) to think we are dishonoring his memory. But our yard is small, and the materials have started to show weathering. What is our responsibility?


Answer:Get a big trashcan.
