Anyone have any ideas on how to explain to a 7 year old that his mom died from a drug overdose? It happened a few months ago, but we're just not finding out the cause and he wants to know. We're not sure what to tell him.

Tough one. At 7, I'd be inclined to just say "we don't know why." My aunt committed suicide when I was 9, and that's what they told me. However, in this case, he might be mad when he gets older and finds out that you lied to him. I would play in the mental illness spin: mommy was sick and wasn't thinking properly. She took too much medicine because her brain wasn't working properly. Something like that.
Snarg might have some good advice on this one.

We've explained the too much medicine part, but now he wants to know why she was taking medicine and what she was taking it for (he's too smart for his own good a lot of the time). We don't really want to say she was doing a speedball, you know? He knows she had problems (we just never elaborated on what problems they were) but at this point he keeps wanting to know more and more and it's like nothing we tell him is satisfying his curiosity. We can't lie to him, we do know that. I don't know. Just not sure how to satisfy his curiosity without telling him too much.

Chances are, even if you told him point blank, he still wouldn't be satisfied. It sounds more like he is questionning death. As in "why did this happen?" not necessarily "why did MY MOM die."

my kid was only three when her mom died
plus we lived on a farm, so death was not a new thing for her
at seven, it would have been much tougher for all of us
i guess i would go with, "your mother was a really good mom, and she loved you, but she had some serious problems she could not overcome"
good luck with this impossible situation
I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk. A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind. A need to return to genuine practice, right effort. Need to push on the great doubt. Need for the spirit. Hang on to the clear light.

That's hard for an adult to swallow. I think with this one, you justhave to say "gramps decided he wanted to be a woman." Ugh. Why would he do that as a older adult? I mean, really?

I know the guy\girls daughter took it very hard.If I could tell you why he really did it I wouldnt be working in the construction industry.I think they glossed over it like hey, pop pop is now grandmom but I've got to think the kids are asking some brutal questions that have no easy answers.
Honestly, it kind of pisses me off that people can do that with kids or grandkids in the picture. As far as I know, to get a sex change, you have to be living your life as that sex. How did he pull that one off in front of the grandkids ?
I mean, I'm all for people living out the life they feel is right, but couldn't he have stopped short of the sex change? Like what? He's...she's gonna go nail dudes now?

Its totally bizarre(obviously) but I think he's a woman now who still like women. He was a lesbo trapped in a mans body.
I've always thought it was kind of a mental illness thing but some people get mad when you say that and equate it to being gay and how its just how the persons brain is wired so its normal.
It is actually a mental disorder though (a classified one), whereas being gay is not one.
