What we've done is accepted all help that would work.Rejected help that wouldnt have worked.Take the French for example.The "help" they offered would have done more damage then good to the environment because of a chemical they use to disperse oil.Is it closed minded to reject that "help" then?Hell no it would have made the situation worse.Doesnt that make sense?

How much money did BP save? about $5 million.


The Chornicle's Loren Steffy wrote on Sunday that the steps BP may have taken to cut costs on the now-leaking Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico saved it about $5 million. The tradeoff?

Eleven people are dead, the Gulf is despoiled, livelihoods along its coast area in jeopardy, beaches are tarred and even the oil industry itself now finds itself shut out of its most promising area for new exploration.

Steffy reached the $5 million figure by asking a half-dozen independent oil industry experts to estimate what steps the company skipped/avoided and how much time it saved them. He and his consultants used a rough estimate of about $1 million per day to lease the rig and contractors and other equipment. Steffy didn't have space in his column to break out all the numbers but shared them with us.

According to Steffy's experts, the rough cost is reached as follows:

Run and cement liner: 36 hours.

Set liner packoff and circulate out: 18 hours

Pull out of hole with liner setting tools: 12 hours

Run in hole with 12¼ cleanout assembly and clean out cement to top of liner: 18

Pull out of hole with 12¼ assembly: 12 hours

Run in hole with 8½ assembly to cleanout inside liner: 18 hours

Pull out of hole with 8½ assembly: 12 hours

Total = 4.75 days at $1mm/day = $4.75mm


The savings may have been even larger if one takes into account BP didn't install the lockout ring for the final production string. Doing that would add another 24 to 36 hours, or $1 million to $1.5 million.

so the Oil Leak Cap V. 4.2 is now in place and they are testing it today. Apparently if the pressure is high enough, then they know it worked, if the pressure is too low then they either have a leak in the cap or the oil and gas are leaking out under the sea floor somewhere else and they will have to remove it.

They say the relief well is within just a few feet of intersecting with the blown out well. But they also say that it won't be finished until mid August.

Why is no one saying "you know what? you are a few feet away and its not even mid July. wtf is going to take another month"?
