On a serious note...

Wow Bird, not sure how you'd explain that one. Other than a mental illness maybe?

I'd think you'd find a lot of gay people who disagree that its mental illness.Being gay was once classified as the same so someone putting it on the books as mental illness isnt full proof.

Obama just appointed a he\she to the department of commerce which I wouldnt think he'd do if people were under the impression that being transsexual is a form of being crazy.Could this be the tipping point to where its not thought of as metal illness?

Never read the mag before. I don't know if it's a mental illness or not. I honestly don't know much about it. I know that's what the general consensus of it is, but for factuality purposes, I haven't the foggiest.

BIRD33 Wrote:Thats a terrible situation. You never know how its going to effect a kid.I have friends whose parents are total alcoholics and they won't drink because of it but of course thats not always the case.

Exactly, it can go two ways. Either the kid abhors everything he was exposed to and vows never to live like that, or he falls into the same pattern and repeats his parents mistakes.

Alcoholic parents are 99.9999% of the reason I don't drink. My brother and sister both have substance abuse problems now though. I guess it's all about the choices you make and recognizing destructive behaviour before it overtakes your life.

Listen to this...

I'm talking to a guy who works up state from me and he says "did you here about that girl and the ham sandwich?"I said no so he tells me about this woman who works for social services who he's told me about before. Most stories are about some guy who raped his daughter and she's pregnant, shit like that.Anyway this woman has to go see this girl who was raped a while back and she shows up at her house and the girl is really pissed at everyone(understandably) and she stinks real bad.The social services woman is practically gagging at the smell. She asks the girl if she's showered lately and after haggling with her for a while the girl admits to shoving a ham and cheese sandwich up her vagina two weeks prior. They take her to the hospital and the girls is seriously ill with toxic shock syndrome.

No trips to the deli for a month at least for me.

You could have sex with the child. That'll trump any issues with overdose.

bam Wrote:Anyone have any ideas on how to explain to a 7 year old that his mom died from a drug overdose? It happened a few months ago, but we're just not finding out the cause and he wants to know. We're not sure what to tell him.

Professional counseling is the first thing that comes to mind. Any chance that the state is financially assisting your legal custody of this kid? I ask that only because the state would pay for therapy in most cases--and this kid's gonna need help working through his issues. Not just mom dying--probably his first seven years on this earth would be a good start.
Kudos to you for taking him in, though. I mean that.

Thanks littlelolly. He's been going to a support group since November for kids who have lost a parent and just started one-on-one counseling last week (earliest we could get him in). We didn't qualify for any assistance (they say we make too much) on legal bills or therapy. We already had custody of him (went through a custody battle from Feb 2009 through Sept 2009) and the court again decided that he should remain with us and a month later she overdosed. This time I think we shelled out a little over $4K. The one good thing is that he does qualify for social security survivor benefits and so we've started a fund for him. In all honesty, and as bad as this sounds, that's probably the best thing she's ever done for him (the soc. sec. benefits).
