I used to do onsite service for AOL.
First of all, I ran AOL for years and never had problems.
The biggest issue relating to your question I saw was too many versions of AOL. People would upgrade and never remove older versions.
Try going to control panel and choose add/remove programs. Choose remove AOL. It searches for all versions. If you have multiple versions IE: 5.0/6.0/7.0/8.0, you need to remove all older versions.
Also if you can edit the registry, do a search for "AOL 6.0" as an example and delete all entries to this older version. Remove all folders with older version.
You can also save your bookmarks and emnail addys and completely remove aol. delete your network adapters. Edit the registry and remove all folders. Reboot.
You will then reinstall your adapters and then reinstall the current version of AOL.
Try that, if not then I will try to think of some other issues.
