She didnt watch it.Thats pretty funny.

The guys right on 95% of what he's saying especially how the car companies helped create the original middle class in this country. When you compare the amount of money the banking industry got compared to the auto bailout its a joke especially considering we are making sure some bankers dont lose their half a million salary while we force whole communities to disappear because we shut down a auto plant. Its grossly unfair. He also raises the point of if we let all these auto companies fail what exactly will we manufacture anymore here?WW2 helped get us out of the depression because we were one of the few places that werent bombed to hell after the war and we exported a lot of stuff to meet demand and help dig us out of the hole we were in.Thats not going to be possible now.

They've provided a middle class life for 100's of millions of people. What a bunch of dicks.

If you trust the free market to take care of its employees you are a fool.History shows it won't but you know better now.

How's high health care costs factor into this?Yea those evil unions trying to provide good insurance to their employees are the problem.

Do you realize even non union workers benefit from unions by having their salaries raised to livable standards to match the union pay?Its not like people are driving around in BMW's.

I hope your employer tries to ship your job some where or screws with your benefits.See how fast you try to join a union.

The fact we poured billions into the banks and a fraction of that into the auto industry is a joke.Real communities with real people are getting hurt not because of unions but because of poor marketing and design.Do unions need to make concessions, sure and they have.To act like they are the biggest problem when they've helped feed, clothe and educate a good % of americans but just turn a blind eye to the bankers still riding in their private jets is a joke.

That dude for prez ! - WoolyGoat - 02-20-2009

unions essentially remove someone's requirement to be good at their job. laziness and ineptness are protected and rewarded, and I think that's disgraceful.

and it's the health care costs that continue into an employee's retirement that are the problem.

That dude for prez ! - BIRD33 - 02-20-2009

Do you deal with a lot of unions? My experience has been just the opposite.I'll take a company who I know will do quality work over one that could fold at any moment.I'm not talking about the janitors union or school teachers etc..In a some case I agree with you but you paint the picture with too broad a brush.Construction unions are the best builders in the world bar none.Unions have done more good than harm for this country, thats not even debatable.

That dude for prez ! - WoolyGoat - 02-20-2009

I think the teachers' union is to blame for so many terrible teachers mucking up school systems.

The baseball players' union is obviously a horse of a different color, but they are the #1 reason the steroid issue hasn't been cleaned up more quickly.

I agree unions have done their share of good, but I just don't see it anymore.

That dude for prez ! - WoolyGoat - 02-20-2009

and I don't personally deal w/unions, other than knowing a lot of teachers.

That dude for prez ! - BIRD33 - 02-20-2009

We have the best construction practices in the world and that is solely built on the unions hard work.A guy who might go from being a plumber to a painter month to month doesnt have the same drive to make things right a union guy who's life is built around plumbing would. Also nothing used to build things in america would be domestic without unions. How many american jobs are directly touched because of that?If you had no unions and no domestic materials buildings would fall down regularly because of shoddiness. The fact that non union people are held to the union standard if they want to continue to do work is also beneficial to everyone. To say they are the biggest problem or one of them in america is a out of sight out of mind lack of understanding of how things get made to the standard you take for granted.

I agree the teachers union needs change.

Professional sports unions are not real unions. Its like 250 people in it at one time.Thats different then 30,000 people working in a steel plant in one town with 150,000 people depending on them.

You take what they do for granted you are so used to it.

why do they get/deserve healthcare and pensions in perpetuity?

WoolyGoat Wrote:why do they get/deserve healthcare and pensions in perpetuity?

Why do you deserve it?You back universal healthcare right? You are going to collect social security right? Those guys busted their ass for that.It wasnt handed to them and they pay for it themselves over time.

If we get universal healthcare done the unions can take that money and put it into their pension funds.

Its a good thing those companies took care of the health of their employees right?

That dude for prez ! - Moto - 02-20-2009

Unions are not the answer. By your logic, Michigan, the most unionized state in the country, should be the most prosperous state in the country and the auto industry would be the economic model that the rest of the country should follow.

I'm 29 years old. I'm never going to see a dime of social security. You can't be serious about that? Social security needs to just be phased out altogether.

I'll get healthcare through my employer (or my wife's employer) while we're employed. When we stop working so do the benefits.

I'd imagine the ultimate goal of this stimulus package is to get back in the black. If it does happen don't you see them dealing in some way with social security? It might not be the system it is now but you can't have people pay into it their whole lives and then pull the plug on it without giving something back to the people who paid into it.

There are millions of seniors living off off social security. What would you propose those people or people our age do when they turn 65 and they work for a non union company with no pension. What do you plan on letting them do, die off?Come on.I don't see how its going to get fixed at the moment but it has to be done and we probably could have worked something out when Clinton balanced the budget so it is feasible if we don't go willy nilly on what countries we "bring freedom to".

I get healthcare through my work too but 65 million other americans arent as lucky.Thats real people we are talking about. If you get hurt and your wife has to quit her job to care for you is that just tough luck and you both should be thrown out to the wolves?

A lot of your point of view seems to be the tough guy, let those lazy poor people starve stuff the GOP specializes in.I'm from the school that believes humans all deserve to be fed and get healthcare no matter what.Call me a bleeding heart but some people never get the chances you and I have.
