CHAMPAIGN — Maybe it actually was the ball's fault?

Normally when shooters blame the ball for their poor performances, they are just seeking an outlet for frustration.

But Wednesday night, when Illinois started off its 74-63 victory over Oakland ice cold — something seemed suspicious.

After all, this was the same Illinois team that hit 11 of 13 3-pointers during one stretch Saturday against Gonzaga. In this game, the Illini began it 3-for-13 from the field. Turns out, the ball may have contributed to that.


That's because for more than six minutes, the two teams played using a women's ball, which is smaller in circumference and lighter than a regulation-size men's ball.
