ah...

he is fucked hard right now. I'm sure vegas is fielding calls from avid gamblers that lost money on games he officiated. Add to the fact that the mob is involved and I'm guessing he is in witness protection right now.

What a big black eye for the NBA.

He went to a high school near me.I think this is obviously David Sterns worst nightmare.Check out the video below to see some questionable calls. It would be very easy to give one team a bunch of foul shots on cheap calls to push them over the spread.I love the fact it was the Philly mob pushing his buttons.I don't think this will hurt the NBA to much if its just one ref but the uproar will last until the end of next season.Fuck Sergio Garcia.

I think it's pretty serious, and it's going to extend beyond the NBA. Referees/Officials/Umpires in all sports are going to have this cloud above them for a little while.

That was a good clip. That late foul call was horrendous...and now makes perfect sense.

holy fuck..

i'd like to know how many playoff games he did...

i think its going to be a huge deal... stern should just retire now rather than fight all of this negative publicity.

I think people are kind of overreacting, its not the black sox scandal.Only people who bet on the spread got screwed which is a minority.I agree it will cast suspicion on all refs in every sport but it didnt change the winner of any games(to my knowledge).I think it will blow over eventually.I agree with Bill simmons that the NBA has a problem with its fans in general. Its almost like the most exciting part of the year has become the lottery and the draft.People barely pay attention during the regular season(which is why I think the ref thing will blow over) and the finals gets no ratings. There are no exciting teams anymore. The spurs are great but boring. The most exciting series was Golden State\Dallas and the games didnt start until 10 PM.Donaghy is just one more problem for David Stern.

By the way if you were wondering if Vegas will get a franchise that answer is no.

Haha, seriously.

It'll be interested to see how Stern handles this. Obviously he's investigating everything, but how much is he going to share? Is Donaghy himself going to give up any details? Which games, and how?

The FBI will make him give up the info on all the games he fixed.Thats going to be sweet.

The interesting part will be to see how vegas handles this. Will they give the money back that people lost on fixed games?

Pretty good Q&A on espn.com with some expert handicapper:

ESPN.com: So what do you think, given your experience, might have happened with Tim Donaghy?

BL: You see a lot of calls in the NBA, "Hey -- he didn't even touch him." But he's [under suspicion] because they will go back and watch every game he officiated, know the spread, know the totals, they'll watch the fourth quarter and they'll know exactly what games he [allegedly] fixed. One hundred percent, no questions asked, they'll know exactly.

They just have to look at the fourth quarter. That's where you'd be able to tell. I'm telling you -- it would have to be the total, not the winners or losers. You can't dictate a side, especially in the NBA. He couldn't take that chance. If someone gets injured or doesn't show up or is having a terrible night or whatever, you can't do it. But manipulating the total you can control from the very tip. If you need an over, a referee can dictate a high- or low-scoring game just by how he's calling it. It's going to come out.

ESPN.com: Given your expertise in watching and wagering on games, what influence does a referee or official have in the gambling outcome?

BL: If he has action on the game and wants something in particular to happen, I'd say 75 percent. I've been asked for years if games could be fixed. And I always told people not by players. Because the guys in the key positions who could get something done, your quarterbacks and running backs, are making millions and aren't going to risk it all to help some friend make $100,000. An official, though, could do it. In the NFL, there's a task force that on Monday reviews every critical call that came anywhere near the point spread. I don't believe that's ever been done in the NBA.

Thats crazy the NFL looks at the point spread.

Sterns no dope, he'll adopt something like what the NFL is doing.Whats funny is they already have someone who reviews all the games and rates the officials and gives them feedback. What the fuck has that guy been doing all this time? How did Donaghy get away with this for so long?

I guess it's easy to blend in when almost every other ref in the league looks incompetent too.

That clip I posted shows some horrible calls from refs besides donaghy.I bet the NBA is scared shitless about more than one ref being involved.

The guy who did that q&a on espn.com was pretty insistent on the fact that Donaghy was just the first ref to get caught.
