Answer question then post your own...
Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar" who is singing the lyrics to this classic cut from the album "Wish You Were Here"?

he didn't really ever leave, but it was right around the time Piper at the Gates of Dawn came out. he kind of disappeared after Gilmour was brought in to fill in for the slipping Barrett. soon Barrett was only listening in to recording sessions while tripping balls, soon he secluded himself to his apartment and then went full tilt and moved into the English country side secluding himself from the entire outside world.
i may be wrong on the exact time he disappeared, but i remember the turn of events.

2nd on Bill's comment on post #25. Trivia question removed, as it was not related to Pink Floyd, Roy Harper, David Gilmour or Bob Geldof.
