SIOUX FALLS, S.D. â Republican John Thune (search), who narrowly lost his first try for the U.S. Senate two years ago, defeated Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (search) of South Dakota on Tuesday.
Thune had 196,017 votes, or 51 percent, to 187,370 votes for Daschle. Only 16 precincts out of 827 remained to be counted Wednesday morning.
Daschle, vilified by top Republicans as an obstructionist to President Bush's agenda, was the GOP's top Senate target this year. Thune's campaign painted Daschle as out of touch with South Dakotans' values.
The expensive campaign turned increasingly testy this fall, as South Dakotans were inundated with television ads from both sides.
Daschle, seeking a fourth term, had touted his leadership status and the numerous projects and federal funds he landed for the state.
Thune, who served three terms in the U.S. House starting in 1997, lost to Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson by 524 votes in the 2002 election.
