Wind Chill
#1

there's something weird I noticed about wind chills. I was looking at the temp on my motorcycle when riding.

Assuming it is 40F outside.

At 50mph wind chill is 9.328F

at 75mph wind chill is 10.815

and at 90 wind chill is 13.68

shouldn't it be getting colder the faster the wind? :S

It should be :S

Maybe your motorcycle is broken?

aren't these numbers subtracting from 40?

Generally when something tells you the windchill, it tells you what the temperature is with the windchill, it doesn't make you do the work. But I suppose its possible.

well, the reason I said that is because there is no way it is 40 degrees outside and he gets a bike up to 50 mph and now it is 9 degrees. Plus, they should be coming down with more speed.

http://motorcyclecity.com/chill.htm

or if you want to do it the old school way

Wind chill = 91.4 - (0.474677 - 0.020425 * W + 0.303107 * SQRT(W)) * (91.4 - T)

You can peddle that fast? I'm gonna cry

As a mass travels through air, increases in velocity cause friction which results in a slight warming pattern.

OK, I'm full of shit.

I got nuthin!

Wind chill = 91.4 - (0.474677 - 0.020425 * W + 0.303107 * SQRT(W)) * (91.4 - T)

so at 50 mph = W
40 = T

That would be 9.3287 F = wind chill.

But, this must mean that the wind is chilling the 40 degree temperature by 9 degrees. The resulting temperature "feels" like 31 degrees. Ya think?

yes, but it still gets warmer when you go faster. Check it out, I am getting closer

a wind chill graph (with the old and new equations note they both drop then get warmer0

plus

chill requires the detecting body be warmer than the air, and accounts for the boundary  effect, which becomes lower at higher wind speeds.

now if only I knew WHY :S

Well, you are right, at 55 mph it reaches the lowest level, then begins to rise (using your formula).

I don't know the reason for this. I don't think I have ever heard it before. Very interesting.

A+ fucking post, though. The best today.

Shit, that formula doesn't work at 40 mph. If you solve it for a 0 mph wind you get a wind chill of 67 degrees. I call bullshit on the formula.
