When I enrolled in college and went to apply for financial aid, they basically laughed me out the door. Granted, I was able to get loans, but grants? Forget it. My financial aid person actually told me that the only way I'd be able to get assistance is if I had a child out of wedlock and went to a lower paying job. (I only made $10/hour then.) How does that encourage people to do better? I'm not sure. I know that I was infuriated though. I worked full time and went to school full time, all on my own dime. I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my college career and I can't get any assistance? What's messed up is when you go to class, work your ass off and then you have some slacker that shows up to class every 3 days just so they can collect their tuition check. So in my opinion is the system abused? Absolutely. Don't get me wrong, if people need help, I'm fine with that, but fuck giving them money and not demanding that they better themselves. What's that saying? Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime. I personally think it's time we stop "giving" and start "teaching."
Very, very well said.

bam, 8, and Nanner--you guys have totally awesome situations. I wish we had family to help us. They're all hundreds of miles away--we moved out of California the year both of our mothers retired, and they were both (quite verbally) sad that we took away their one chance to babysit. If we had that option, it would be a totally different story because I really did love my pre-baby career and the money would definitely come in handy.

So wait...poor people and their children from broken homes are allowed to be lazy for years on end and drain the system? It shouldn't work that way. They're given the assistance to help get them out of their current situation--not to keep them in it. Instead, they've chosen to stay sucking on the government's teat because it's easier--and why should they have to assume any responsibility when they've had a hard life? This is what liberals want them to do. Poor, poor victims. Here. I'll take care of you. Just vote the way I want you to when the elections come 'round, okay?

How can you put everyone in a box check marked lazy thats on a government program longer then you'd like?Isnt that a little presumptuous and arrogant?Whatever, you're a fucking housewife who thinks paying bills once a month is equal to working full time. You havent a fucking clue how people less fortunate then you have to live and you want to buy a jet ski but the government is taking all your money.Fucking pathetic.

This is another housewife who thinks she knows what the fuck she's talking about. Its you in a nutshell.

littlelolly Wrote:'Scuse me, but I get a nervous tic when people say things like this. Mom had an old back injury. Wasn't so bad she couldn't lay on it and put her legs up in the air without contraception in place. Her choice. Dad decided to become an alcoholic? His choice--and the great thing about AA is that they have meetings 24 hours a day, so use another excuse--er, I mean, example. Has a criminal record? He made a choice to break the law. His decisions and lack of responsibility are now the problems of the taxpaying society? He also made the choice to put himself and his children into a situation they couldn't handle. Should those kids starve? No. But should we have to carry the burden of raising his family forever? No. Excuses only work for so long. I think JCW is right when she talks about better safety nets and whatnot. Forward progress needs to be made or we're doing everyone a serious disservice.

Hold up. Now we're talking about limiting reproductive rights, or worse, punishing them based on people's personal choices?

I work with people with acquired physical and brain injuries. They have the very same right that you do to bear children. Now, can an argument be made that they shouldn't have children if they cannot afford to raise them. Of course it can. But, you can't start suggesting control over who gets to have children based on SES or physical status, can you?

So then, let's look at this slippery slope. You mentioned that if you got strapped for cash, you would spilt the child care responsibilites with your hubby. Great. Now, what happens if that stress and lack of time you spend with him leads to divorce? We know that chilldren of divorce do worse in school. So, those children may already be at a disadvantage when it comes to pursuing advanced education. They would then be more likely to reoly on government assiistance. So, let's make it so that we can't divorce either.

Not so fast! Children in intact, unhappy homes also do worse in school. Hrm. Quite a condundrum here.

No, I don't like that implication at all.

Nope. Actually, 90% of our business is Nissan and Toyota. And my company is financially stable enough to take a hit if GM went under. GM has no sympathy from me.

You are the only libertarian that believes in torture. How does individual rights square with pulling the fingernails off a person who was never convicted of anything? You are a conservative who believes in less government, torture and less taxes.Thats a republican. Most likely you are kind of embarrassed to call yourself that because of the last administration.

say GM goes out of business and all their workers get laid off so there is a huge amount of available labor skilled in the same thing you do.Do your salaries rise or fall based on that?Don't kid yourself you havent benefited from that bail out.

No, but what's your point? Is this a child care pissing contest? We don't have expendable family. My MIL works. At the daycare. FIL =deceased. Mother - deceased. Father - deceased. I would have some slight reservations about sending my daughter to daycare if MIL wasn't there, but it will still be the only option we would pursue.

Most people don't share all of the same views as their political party. I am no exception. I believe in torturing terrorists to get the information we need to protect our country. They do it to us. So if some uses of water boarding and other forms of torture yielded valuable information that might be used to rescue innocent victims of terrorists, there would be no basis to object to it.

No, I'm not embarassed of the last administration nor am I embarassed of the current administration. Both have done things I don't agree with. But embarassed of any administration? No because that would mean (to me) that I was embarassed to be an American and that will never happen.

Except I'm in a completely different area of the automotive industry that GM doesn't even handle so yes, I can confidently say that I did not benefit from the bailout.

Listen Bird. I like you. I think you’re a nice guy. We have a difference in opinion on politics is all. We’ve obviously had different life experiences and upbringings and that’s okay. One of the great things about this country is that we can have differences of opinion and we can voice them. I don’t have to agree with you and you don’t have to agree with me. That’s the beauty of it all. Thanks for the back-and-forth banter- I enjoyed it!
