Obviously what he said was classless but you've got to love that he had the balls to say it.I think its ridiculous that he got suspended for it.Is the word sloppy seconds a curse word or something? He only stated a fact.Doesnt the NHL need guys to be making national headlines like this to gain some interest?I think its good for the game.
Cucumber Wrote:Some intergrity in sportsmanship is expected and required. Have you followed his inane actions? He's an ongoing side-show freak. No one is amused by him any more. Even the team mangement supposts the NHL's decision to suspend him. What's next for this guy? "Yo momma" jokes?
BIRD33 Wrote:I have been following him.Now that I think of it he's my favorite player I guess.I thought him standing in front of the goalie was genius. How many people think of something like that where the league needs to change the rules mid playoff game?Thats hilarious. He seems to be the only entertaining guy in the league.
Sports is entertainment and a some mild mannered shots at a guy over his girlfriend is good for fan interest. The NBA was never as popular as when Dennis Rodman was doing all that crazy shit. This is nothing in comparison to him.
The league is actually suspending a guy for saying another player got his sloppy seconds? How ridiculous is that?If there is a problem between the two players hockey certainly has avenues where it can be settled on the ice.
If we are talking about this how can it be bad for the NHL?
Cucumber Wrote:I never said suspending him was bad for the NHL. I think the NHL was actually trying to stop anything from being settled on the ice. It's one thing to take a shot at the guy who is dating your ex, but saying "sloppy seconds" is over the line.
Comparing hockey players and basketball players (or football players) is like comparing apples and oranges. I mean, like comparing blacks and whites. Doing stupid publicity stunts seems commonplace for football and basketball players, there's a bit more of an "elitist attitude" for hockey players. Not saying that is good, but that is the state of the Bettman administration. The assumption is that these guys love the game for the game, not for the money they get and they certainly don't need to have the sideshow for publicity sake.
BIRD33 Wrote:thats exactly why your league is tanking in the US.Nobody has any personality.Every other guy is a walking corpse personality wise or a foreign guy who barely speaks english. It wasnt always like this.Hockey used to be more of a sport of the common man at least in Philly. Now it costs an arm and a league to see a game and the players walk out of the locker room dressed like stock brokers.Avery is what your game needs desperately.Bettman has been nothing but trouble for hockey. He came from the NBA where they specialized in not focusing on the players because a majority of them are crazy black guys.Hockey needs this buzz.
I'm sorry but neither the word sloppy or seconds is offensive to anyone and suspending him is one step towards enacting a grammar police.Hockey has fighting just for this reason.
Cucumber Wrote:It looks as though the NHL administration, team management and players all thought otherwise. I'm not saying he's not amusing, but I support the suspension, regardless.

Pickle Wrote:Because it attracts certain types of people, who create an undesired fanbase for the sport. :*>
Pickle Wrote:It's not about that, though. I kind of find Sean Avery amusing. However, the fans he attracts are those that thing WWE wrestling is a sport. Hockey isn't about that and doesn't need the drama. It's not WHAT he said, it's the premise of unprovoked, rehearsed personal attacks. REAL sports, don't need that, or the people that support it.

NASCAR is about engineering, design, mechanics, skilled drivers, tire manufacturing, fuel efficiency, engine design, blah blah blah.
But, the seats are still filled with fans waiting for the next crash. If you think the seats in hockey arenas aren't filled with fans waiting on the next fight to break out, then you have lost your mind.

Pickle Wrote:I didn't say they weren't waiting for the next fight - I think the fights are great, but they need to stay on the ice. Personally attacking someone in an interview is not what hockey is about. You have a beef, you've got 60 minutes to work it out. End of story.
