I am a former LSU student who lives in Lafayette, LA. At the beginning of the season, I bought a purple and gold collared LSU shirt to wear on Saturdays in support of the Tigers. I came in from work in Texas this weekend and my girlfriend asked me if I wanted to meet up with her family at the UL homecoming football game at half time. I thought about whether or not it would interfere with the LSU vs. Tulane game and agreed that I would go as long as I could get out of there by 7 to watch LSU. She said OK and I headed to the UL game with her. As we walked in she said, “Are you going to take off that LSU shirt?” I said hell no, this shirt shouldn’t be a problem at a UL game. What took place in the next 30 minutes proved I was wrong, it was a big problem. I walked in and people were giving me dirty looks. So, just to keep from getting in a fight or something, I stopped at a stand and purchased a ULL bright red cap for $22.00. I put the hat on and walked in the upper deck. As I walked down to where her family was sitting, I heard a bunch of people hollering at me blurting out profanity saying, “F you LSU, Go the F to Baton Rouge ****!, LSU sucks, Get the F outta here, Take that shirt off!” I pointed to my ULL red hat which was on my head, saying hey guys I’m on your side. They just got louder so I turned away. As I was trying to pretend I didn’t hear them I hugged my girlfriend’s mom and said hello to her grandparents and sat down. Then, hoping the rude comments would fade out, I heard the whole crowd start chanting “TAKE THAT SHIRT OFF, TAKE THAT SHIRT OFF, TAKE THAT SHIRT OFF!” The chant was so loud that I think someone could’ve heard them all the way in Baton Rouge. It was unbelievable, I even had a ULL cap on and they still hated me so much. Probably 10,000 people were booing and chanting to take my shirt off. So I thought about what I should do. I definitely wasn’t taking my shirt off. The chanting had become unbearable. I might have sat down for 2 minutes when I looked over at my girlfriends family and said, Well I’m leaving, see you guys later. When I stood up, everyone in the upper deck stood up too, the whole crowd roared in happiness because I got up and was walking out. It was the most humiliating thing I could have ever imagined. They were throwing ULL nerf footballs, drinks and other stuff at me. As I left the upper deck I looked at everyone in there and took the hat off that I bought and threw it on the ground. Even though I had a ULL cap on, they still completely booed me out of the stands because my shirt said LSU. One guy told me that I was a bitch for wearing a LSU shirt and that he ought to kick my a@$ for that. The police had to help me get out of there. Needless to say, I have never been so shocked and disturbed in all my life.
I did not tell you this story because I feel sorry for myself or anything. What they did to me was wrong. It was me vs. 10,000 + UL fans. What really disturbed me was that I was spending money toward their athletic program, and supporting them. What they did in return was BOOED me out of town. I will never, ever send any of my kids there or donate a dime to that school. I live in Lafayette, I like football and was willing to support ULL as a second favorite team. I even bought a cap! So much for that.
