Quote:"New England realistically may have been able to catch one or two plays from doing that and they could've had somebody in the press box getting the same information," said former Atlanta Falcons general manager Ken Herock, who also worked as an executive in Oakland and Green Bay. "And what you're actually talking about is one or two plays out of about 60 snaps a game. That really isn't a great advantage."

The big part of the punishment is the draft pick. The monetary shit was going to happen either way, but Goodell chose draft picks over a suspension because it's a harsher punishment. Suspend Belichick for a game and what's the worst possible scenario? They lose? So they're 12-4 instead of 13-3? Or take a first rounder away, so they have to play the next 5 years w/o a Laurence Maroney or a Logan Mankins.

As for the quote, I'm not trying to say that what they did is right. My only point is that every team that has lost a game to the Patriots in the last several years is whining that they only lost because the Pats were stealing signals. That's what I think is ridiculous.
The Pats are wrong and it was a stupid, idiotic, and arrogant thing to do. They broke the rules and deserve the punishment they received, if not one that was even worse. Everyone steals signs. Whether people use binoculars or game footage or whatever. That quote basically says that the advantage they received is minimal if not nonexistent (as compared to say, binoculars) and that it's no where close to being worth the risk.
WoolyGoat Wrote:They probably should have taken more picks. A first rounder hurts, but the Pats had only two draft picks (1st and 2nd round) even make the team this year. They'll just be in the same boat next year. Inconvenienced, yes. Enough to stop them from videotaping again, yes. Enough to have it really affect them on the field, not really.

BIRD33 Wrote:That #30 or 32 pick that they are going to lose is going to set the franchise back decades. It'll set them back a hell of a lot more than 1 or 2 losses will. Even if they gave him a 4 game suspension, two of their next 4 games are against Buffalo and Cleveland, who they'd beat with their eyes closed. So give them Ls against SD and Cincy...4 game suspension = 2-2 record at worst. Does that really punish them?

WoolyGoat Wrote:They wouldn't lose to Buffalo or Cleveland with you as the coach.
He'd still do all of the game planning and week-long preparation anyway. But yes, if a suspension somehow cost them homefield advantage, that would probably be worse than losing a draft pick that they don't necessarily need. But, they did go TO San Diego last year and beat a 14-2 team in their own house, so who knows.
Yes I know they only won because they stole signs
