actually, i believe that the world is getting pretty fucked up. There is a team of scientists that are going to present a series of scientific predictions at some global conference in europe real soon. The timetable that they have for events that are going to be very noticible in the next several years is pretty incredible.

Major changes around the globe as early as 15 to 20 years from now.

I think that we've all turned a blind eye to these problems for too long now. Might not be any turning back now.

Bird flu or some other shit will wipe most of us out before we get to that point, please God.

If we lose the populations of Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent we'll be in good shape.

Edit: And England

We are overdue for a mass extinction of some sort. I doubt it will be bird flu. More than likely it'll be something that drops you dead before scientist even know what is going on. Air travel and the such will help it spread faster than anything ever!

holy fuck I'm baffled by flump, not so long ago he was bitching around telling that global warming wasn't a reality and stuff.

Anyhow yeah stuff are now too late for a "get back" to the situation as we knew it...we can only limit the impact of the changes and prepare our society towards the big changes that will happen.

statistically we can't be all killed by a single virus or stuff like that there will be peeps who are going to develop natural immunity (or just be fucking lucky).

*what you said is true* in a few billions years the sun will explode if we stay on that planet we are going to be all extincts.
Oh well there are too asteroids, those who are nicknammed "planet killers" (don't need any explanation on them). nasty stuff (and a-bombs don't work as you suppose on space)
Ah and there's too the possibility of a star going supernova close to us (well this one's dim) who is going to mass extinct our planet through the irradation who will blast us (supposedely already happenned once or twice during earth lifetime).

I'm no expert, hence the "some other shit".

I read a comet is heading our way...

So no single plague can kill us now?

also..

couldn't yellowstone erupt at anytime and completely fuck us up?

isn't the earth about to wobble on its axis according to the myan calendar?

aren't there other occurancies that could really fuck earth up?

Yeah, either a comet or an asteroid or something is going to pass within about 15,000 miles of earth. Which is pretty fucking close considering they are only estimating the distance and there is probably a 15,000 mile standard deviation on the calculation.

Not sure what year it happens, but it is not many years away.

aem. 15'000 miles is really really really low speaking astronomically. I mean if your asteroid is going to be at this distance count on an impact.

Anyhow what you may reffer is this one : http://astrobiology.arc.nasa.gov/news/ex...fm?id=9251

Remote Chance of Asteroid Impact in 2019

A small near-Earth asteroid (NEA) called 2002 NT7 has an extemely slight chance of striking Earth in 2019. The odds of an impact are so low (roughly 0.00039%, or one in 260,000) that the hazard has been variously rated as 0 or 1 out of a possible 10 on the Torino scale. However, while the probability is tiny, it is not zero. Astronomers will continue to observe the movement of the asteroid over the next few days to determine its orbit more precisely. Once the orbit is clearly known, the risk can be recalculated more accurately. In the past, recalculating has usually removed the risk entirely. Asteroid and comet impacts are of tremendous significance to astrobiology. They may have dramatically steered evolution in new directions, and could influence Earth's future habitability. Understanding how life on a planet is influenced by events in space is a major thrust of astrobiology.

I think that the human component is negligible compared to the earths cyclic nature. More and more scientists are coming out disputing the "documentary" that Alice put out. It was a lot a bloviating and scare tactics. Recycling and energy conservation are good things and I encourage that behavior in everyone, but don't fucking bullshit me for a political platform.

Also, I read somewhere that the oil companies are investing more in alternative energy sources than any other industry or government. They know their supplies are limited so they are starting to hedge their bets.

The "green" industry is fast growing and is just as irresponsible, with their "end of the world" scenarios as a marketing ploy, as the oil companies are paying other groups to dispute global warming.

What a fucking sham it is from every angle.

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?

What political platform is Al Gore on when he's not running for anything?

What % of profits are oil companies reinvesting in science that could take away some of those profits?Do you think a corporation would with hold science that they dicovered that would hurt their bottom line?

How can the green industry be irresponsible when their efforts will make a cleaner planet for your kids to live on?I know most in that industry are just in it for the profits but going their route has obvious benefits for everyone on earth(cleaner water, air etc..) except oil corporations.

I hear you that a lot of this is still up in the air but if you've got one side that has a 50% chance of being right meaning nothing catastrophic happens and the other side with a 50% chance that the world will undergo dramatic changes that would kill billions wouldnt you err on the side of caution especially when it ultimatly means a cleaner enviroment for all of us?

I saw a piece on some eskimos that live on the edge of a glacier that might have to move their whole town because they are falling into the North Atlantic. They said that the walruses need thick ice to hold their weight, so instead of coming by their village and sitting around waiting on some eskimos to come and kill them to chew their blubber, they just scurry on by.

1. Al made it a while back, when he was still considering running, and don't count him out yet.
2. The percentage is not important. That is the same as saying the US gives the most to the world in real dollars, but as a percentage it is not enough. Bad argument. As for hiding things to protect the bottom line, entirely possible, likely even. Oversight should be part of it. No doubt. But I don't remember saying anything about that.
3. Doomsaying is irresponsible. Recycling and enviromental responsibility, as I previously stated, are good things and should be encouraged.

I think we are mostly on the same page about this. I just don't like the Gestapo tactics some of the most voal of the eviromentalists are using. And they get the majority of the press.

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?
