I stay pretty busy and there's always something that needs to be done/taken care of. You take care of 2 little kids for 24 hours a day and see if it isn't stressful sometimes. Sometimes I want to pull my hair out and lock myself in a room alone with a bowl. But, I would't have it any other way and it is very rewarding. And nothing is better than hearing your little one say "mama" or do something new for the first time.

Most problems occur early in the morning when the crews are starting new jobs or starting something new on a job they are on. I'm real busy until about 8:30. By 9:00 I try to be in the office. Enter bills from the day before. Enter any deposits that have been made in the bank. Pay any bills that are due or any bills on jobs that we got paid on. Not much in terms of stress during the middle of the day. Lunch about 11:30, usually by myself reading the paper. Try to hit a few more jobs during lunch and back in the office by mid afternoon. Enter more bills and catch up on payroll entries and job costing close outs. Review a job or two in late afternoon that bids the next day. Make sure all foremen know where they are going the next day and that all materials are ordered. I like to be at the office/shop when all crews come in. Usually a few guys wanting to borrow some money or get a traffic ticket taken care of. The last crews usually get to the office by 6:30 pm and I leave.
The most stressful part is when I have several crews starting new jobs on the same day. Tons of questions, most that I can answer, but some that I have to get other people (inspectors, developers, etc) involved in and there may be a delay waiting for them to answer their phone. In the meantime, I have a crew of 20 guys standing around waiting. Material shortages also become stressful. Having the right balance of people and workload is tremendously stressful. In construction you try to stay a little bit overloaded so that you never have any downtime. But, invariably someone wants you on their job today and you can't get there until tomorrow. A major piece of equipment breaks down and you can't get parts. You try to explain that we aren't like firemen, where the crews sleep upstairs and wait on the bell to go off so they can fly to the next job. No one could afford the cost of a company that has so many people and so much equipment that they are just waiting for someone to call.
People want you on their job and it turns out not to be ready when they say. So you constantly have to be driving by jobs that are coming up and estimating yourself the progress. Sometimes people want you on their job "just so it looks like something is getting done". You have to weigh each customer and their value to determine which fires you put out each day.
At the end of the day it is rewarding. You got some things built. You figured out how to get somethings done that looked impossible that morning. You kept someone happy that you thought was going to no longer do business with you. You got paid on a job that you thought might never pay. You got a bid on a job that you didn't think you had a chance on.
