Movie Review: Wyatt Earp
#1

starring Kevin Costner. Costner was $$$ in that role. The scene where he meets Doc Holliday for the first time was great. Also, the role where he stands up to the lynch mob coming for Tommy Behind the Deuce. Lots of good scenes in that movie.

I liked both movies, but I thought it was better. Costner was a total bad ass. I kind of liked Val Kilmer better than Dennis Quaid as Doc Holiday, but Dennis Quaid seemed more like a guy dying of whatever the fuck he had. And Quaid didn't have those hokey (im your huckleberry lines).

They didn't use any huckleberry lines in Wyatt Earp. But, Quaid played Holliday much the same as Kilmer did. Both of them made him to be a pompous smart ass. Over the top perfect english.

In the beginning of the movie, Costner was in Dodge City and some guy was drunk and shooting up the town from inside the saloon. Everyone was hiding on main street and Costner (who's just some drifter at this point) runs for cover and ends up in an alley with a Deputy and another guy. Anyway, the other guy tells the Deputy he better get his ass in there and stop the guy or people are going to get killed. Bullets are flying out all the windows in the saloon.

The marshall basically says, "fuck no, you can have my badge". So, coster says, "give me your fucking gun". The guy hands it over, he spins the barrel chamber up and down his sleeve, flips it a few times in his hand like he's getting the feel right, and then runs across the street and in the bar. You hear a couple of shots and then Costner drags the guy out by one boot and lays him crying in the middle of the street. They pinned a badge on him right there.

Okay, Val Kilmer as Doc was one of the best performances in modern history.

Tombstone ruled.

"You gonna skin that smoke wagon, or just stand there and bleed?"

"Why Kate, You're not wearing a bustle. How lewd"

"It's true, you are a good woman. Then again, you may be the antichrist."

"No need to go heeled to get the bulge on a tub like you."

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?

In one scene early in his career, Costner is sheriff of this little town. Anyway, some guy gets in a card game and ends up killing a really popular guy in this town. So Costner puts him in jail. Well the towns people get up a lynch mob. About 50 guys with guns, shovels, you name it, torches, etc, come marching up the street to the jail house.

The inmate is begging for a gun or anything to protect himself. Costner tells him to shut the fuck up. Costner goes out on the front porch, pulls his pistol and says, "Look this man is going to be tried with a jury and justice will be done. There will be no lynching". Well, they all pull their guns and say, "get out of the way or we'll kill you, too".

Costner points his gun and cocks it at the guy that said it and says, "Look, I know you boys with all of those guns can get through me to take him. But, I'm here to tell you that I am going to take out 10 or 12 of you before you do it. Starting with you." Then he pulls out another pistol and points it at another guy and says "Then I'll take you, and you, and then you. Now are there any other of you boys that want to join these brave men that I'm fixing to kill up here on the front row?"

They all left.

I liked this version just fine, but I Tombstone was a better movie, in my estimation.

this thread brings a tear to my eye.

I have seen them both. both are good flicks and have fine points. If I had to pick one I'd go with tombstone. why? you could actualy feel the friendship between doc and earp. That there was good acting.

I loved tombstone. But I was totally impressed with Costner as Wyatt Earp. That scene where he first met Doc Holliday and he stared him down and never flinched.

I just can't ever get the Computer that Wore Tennis Shoes image off of that other guy. It would be like watching Gomer Pyle try to play Patton or something.

You know other than being the reason that Earp went on a killing spree and had to get out of being a lawman, the OK Corral scene wasn't much of a highpoint of this movie.

This movie was much more of a documentary about his whole life. That gunfight changed his life because after that he wouldn't rest until he hunted down four or five of the guys that killed his brother.
