My daughter wants one for Christmas. I know nothing about them. Anything I should know before trying to buy one?
She just wants it for music and she will be 11 when Christmas comes around.

Get her the Ipod Shuffle, easy to use and small. No way an 11 year old can break it. It doesn't have screen. If you want to upgrade get the new Nano. You won't spend more than 200 bucks.
