You've never been in a southern pine grove have you? Southern pine trees can grow only a couple of feet apart.
Chances are they cut all the other ones down to put the houses and the roads in....those in the lines were just what was left.

There are two behind my house in my neighbors yard that are well over 200 years old.. really really big. Its probably part of the reason I didn't lose more limbs than I did.
I should have taken pictures of them..
