HARSH WORDS: Jerry Rice, who is all but a certain Hall of Fame selection when he retires, made no secret where he stands in Terrell Owens' contract squabble with the Philadelphia Eagles.
"I don't feel like you're bigger than the team," Rice said after the Broncos finished practice Wednesday night with the Texans.
Owens was suspended by the Eagles for one week after being told to go home from training camp. As network helicopters swirled over Owens' New Jersey home, the Eagles released a statement saying Owens had been suspended for "undisclosed team issues."
However, several reports said Owens was suspended after having a run-in with coach Andy Reid. Owens has been unhappy with the seven-year, $48.97 million deal he signed with the Eagles in 2004.
"I really don't condone what he did . . . ," Rice said. "You can't be a distraction like that. It's just unfortunate. . . . You're talking about a team that went to the Super Bowl last year. . . . They need to be thinking about what they need to do to get back to the Super Bowl. "One thing about T.O. is T.O. is very defensive. And if he feels you've crossed him, you've stabbed him in the back, then he doesn't forget that. As a professional, though, you've got to be able to move on. . . . I think it's just out of hand, it's out of control."
