We don't elect leaders, we elect political parties. And we do not have equal representation from each province. It makes it very difficult to get the majority of people to listen to one voice.

Weird system.In a way I like that one person doesnt have total control of a party and could create a cult personality that people would defend no matter how bad their decisions turn out to be but it doesnt seem like theres much room to evolve in your positions on issues.If your party was always on the one side of an issue it would seem difficult to change with the times without hurting the entire parties credibility.

Infact, if Quebec and Ontario all voted Conservative, and the rest of the country Voted Liberal - Conservatives would win a majority government. Those two provinces alone have enough seats that the rest of the country means squat.

The seats a province gets is based on the population of that province, correct?

Its sort of similar to how California and New York have more presidential delegates than 10 other smaller states combined.

Yup, it's by population. We have 'ridings' each county has so many ridings based on population. Each riding is a seat - our smaller provinces have as little as 1-7 seats. Which I think is BS.

Had the vote been based purely on # of votes for each party, instead of # of ridings won - the election would've been completely different.

Conservatives only got 37.6 percent of the votes, but they got about 45% of the seats. The Green party was the only party to gain votes this election, but they lost their seat in parliament.

The end result, does not at all reflect that actual voting.

I watched this discussion while doing paperwork yesterday and it cleared up a lot of questions I had about how Canada runs.First off it seems like the prime minister was screwed by the financial crisis.They were saying that Harper wanted to have special elections before Obama got elected because he was afraid that Canada would be swept up in the progressive big government movement like America and he'd be on the outs shortly.Its weird American politics has so much influence on Canadian politics.If the economic crisis didnt happen things would have worked out fine for him?

Secondly Harpers actions seemed to set into motion a kind of search for opposition coalition to him that was dependent on the bloc party that had never happened before that would have put the guy who lost badly in the last election in power.Thats almost comical.

How can you be dependent on a party that wants to succeed from the country itself?Why is the bloc a viable party if they can't even get a majority of Quebec to vote for leaving Canada to form its own country?Seems like this issue will always being serious leverage for them to use against Canada.Why can't that be put to bed?I know some canadian history and I know it once was kind of its own country but so was Texas here and we wouldnt allow Texas to hold one party or the other hostage like the bloc is.

I could go on but those are the things that that struck me as funny.

The other thing now that I think about it was how the governor general does have some real power if the parliamentary decisions she's just supposed to ceremoniously ratify are not 100% clear.She could view it any way she wants it seems like especially if one party is backing her up on it.
