Ask Flumper Anything

I have a good friend that I hired as an engineer out of college. He is from a very small town. Anway, his brother (who we'll call Dave) still lives in that small town. He has started a plastics injection molding company there and after the first few years of horrible debt, he has managed to turn it into a fairly profitable business.

Anway, there was a black kid in the town that was a star athelete. This kid came to him for a job. Dave hired him, but soon found out that the kid was very undependable. He would be late for work, he would sometimes miss work. So, Dave gave him a cell phone and told him to always call him no matter why he was going to be late, just to let him know.

Dave soon found out the kid was very impoverished. He did not have a real home, but he would bounce from house to house. His grandmother was his caretaker, but she did nothing for him. Dave began to set rules for him. He would even pick him up or take him home if the kid couldn't get a ride.

After a few months, Dave began to know more and more. The kid didn't have much in the way of clothes. Carried his things around in a paper bag. He would hide his belongings so that people didn't know he had to carry them around. Dave began to grill him on things like hygeine (sp). He would ask him when he took his last bath, brushed his teeth, washed his clothes, etc. The kid didn't know much about how these things needed to be done.

Finally, Dave moved him into his house. This kid is a high school junior, about 6'-0 tall, and star running back for the high school football team. Now Dave's wife has him living with them. They have two small sons of their own. But Dave says that he is really enjoying it. The kid is smart and he loves the fact that he now has some new clothes and a home. He does not get into any trouble. Dave almost has to make him go out with friends on the week-end.

When the kid moved in he brought a box to Dave and asked him to look at it. He had letter from every major university in the country. Most not even opened. He had letters from Florida State that weren't even opened. Now Dave is working to find him a scholarship to play college football.

So, in this instance, I could see myself with a black grandchild.

Well, I do see her point. If she can't imagine having the proper parenting skills to manage three daughters, then I don't think it would be fair to any of them to try.

Do you think that you have enough cred to organize a mass boycott of any one forum?

I fear that.

No, because I don't try to make a lot of friends. I pretty much just like to be entertained by people and try to get some laughs out of other people. I don't try to build any strong bonds with any one. So, for that reason, I would see no reason why me asking a bunch of people to join me to do anything that they would do it.

Now, I have done it for other people. Mostly because I thought it was funny or I thought it would increase some board activity somewhere because of it.

I want a really good miter saw. One with a large blade and that will tilt and slide in every direction.

Only, I want one where the saw can slide forward and back, also.

I would also like a wire feed welder for the house.

No question, Leftneck is a fag.

You know me, I won't do anything if the thread passes the UJ thread. I do think that we need one of these threads going each week for another member of IT. This thread needs to die tomorrow, though.

When will the Big One hit California? Advance notice would be nice.

You know, I have wondered that myself. After watching the enormous expenses of the hurricane damages, it is hard to even conceive of what the cost is going to be when a really big one hits a major city in California.

Since most of us know a bit about global plate tectonics, we all know that the plates continue to move and the friction continues to build. Perhaps technology will reveal one day that the potential energy that builds as these plates move against each other can be released from time to time by manmade methods. Thus, avoiding the damage of a buildup to the point that all of the energy is released at once.

Anyway, I would think we will see a "big" one within the next 50 years.

I do not know what either of those things are.

That's a good idea.

I guess you answered my next question, though. Which was "Are you getting tired of this thread yet?". I actually think it's quite entertaining.

I'm having trouble with my first serve. I keep dumping it in the net. What should I do?

Motorized Miter Saw

Today, a miter saw (also called a chop saw or drop saw) usually refers to a power tool used to make a quick, accurate crosscut in a workpiece. It is most frequently used to cut wood, although some plastics and light metals can also be cut with the tool. Common uses include framing operations and the cutting moulding. Most miter saws are relatively small and portable, with common blade sizes ranging from eight to 12 inches.

The miter saw makes cuts by pulling a spinning circular saw blade down onto a workpiece in a short, controlled motion. The workpiece is typically held against a fence, which provides a precise cutting angle between the blade and the longest workpiece edge. In standard position, this angle is fixed at 90°.

A primary distinguishing feature of the miter saw is the miter index. The miter index allows the angle of the blade to be changed relative to the fence. While most miter saws enable precise one-degree incremental changes to the miter index, many also provide "stops" that allow the miter index to be quickly set to common angles (such as 15°, 30°, or 45°).

Well, based on that limited information, I am going to have to assume that you have been having trouble hitting serves long and are now trying to adjust your serve to keep that from happening. Players of average to below average height (which I think describes you), with a hard, flat serve must learn to barely clear the net to keep their serves from going long. Adding some topspin will increase your margin of clearance over the net to several times larger. The most preferred power serve among advanced players has a mix of topspin and slice.

If you meet the ball too low, it is like you are making yourself shorter, thus reducing the vertical angle from your racquet over the net to your target area. A low contact point also disrupts the upward whipping action you create at full extension. You should meet power serves at full upward extension.

Hitting some topspin on the serve will allow you to hit over the net by feet instead of by inches. Just as meeting the ball too low can make you hit long, it can also make you hit the net, because it reduces your margin of clearance over the net and disrupts the mechanics of a proper serve. You might be meeting the ball too far in front of yourself. Try tossing less forward or leaning in more just before you swing. You might be fooled by the illusion that you can hit down on a serve and get it over the net. You would have to be well over seven feet tall for this to be physically possible. Most of us have to hit up to get a serve in. If your toss peaks much higher than your point of contact, the ball will develop a significant downward vector as it descends toward your racquet. Try tossing no more than a few inches higher than your point of contact. Make sure to keep your head pointed upward until at least a split second afteryou've hit the ball. If you pull your head down too early, you'll pull your racquet down with it.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Post pics.
