Cucumber Wrote:Yeah, you know, menopause really makes women crazy. Losing those hormones really imbalances women, esp. if they are slightly prone to being emotional anyways.

I used to do the same thing with my mom - give her momey for much needed groceries and she'd come home with cigarettes and McDonald's. ><

Someone once told me that the final act of growing up is forgiving ones parents which makes sense to me because they are after all only human and arent some perfect person because they are a parent. That being said a lot of my fears about having kids of my own are wrapped up in not wanting to be a burden or an inconsiderate asshole like my mother is to my sister and I to my own children. Its almost like she's leading by example meaning don't follow her example unless you want to be an ass.

You'll have to check with her on that. Her BF seems pretty open minded. And he won't propose, so she's totally fair game.

I'm going to sound like a retard here, but it wasn't until I actually became a parent that I was able to forgive my parents. Sadly, that meant it was too late as they were both gone by that time. But, having kids really makes you understand why your parents did they things they did, in large part. It's like this light bulb moment where you can't hold it against them anymore.

That said, I know a lot of kids who have never felt burdened by their parents. Some parents are quite normal. Maybe you will be too.

I can see what you mean.I'm still bitter about a few things in the past but I'd like to think I've forgiven most of it or at least don't hold a grudge.Sadly that has more to do with me thinking she's mentally ill and can't control her asshole tendency's.

I'm pretty sure I'll be a normal parent because I'm paranoid I'll end up like my mother.

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

Cucumber Wrote:Absolutely! And you never know "who" you are going to get from one moment to the next. I got to the point where middle of the night phone calls would make me shake immediately, because I knew it was her, phoning to tell me goodbye. Eventually, it's just like "OK! BYE!" cause you get so sick of the drama. It was getting to the point where my mental health was suffering because of hers.

Oddly enough, around the time that she was attempting every few months, I was volunteering as a suicide intervention crisis worker. :S

How is it that you are familiar with BPD, if I may ask?

BPD of course affects the person that has it tremendously, but the people around that person suffer just as much, if not more because of the feelings of helplessness and uncertainty.

I think the things we go through in life shape a lot of what we choose to do in our lives- a lot of people with mental health issues or who have dealt with a family member with mental health issues end up working in the mental health field.

My dad has BPD (untreated). I also have BPD (treated).

And I suppose the upside (if you can find one) to having a mentally ill parent is that you are much more aware of your own mental health issues and are more likely to seek treatment for them.
