like it or not, Boston is a pretty major media market. both if its winter sports teams were in the finals in the last year, and the NHL had better ratings.

so when you say "anyone anywhere" you're wrong. completely totally 100% wrong.

sure the NBA is more popular on the whole, but not to the retarded degree you're playing it up to be. which isn't surprising because you're a fucking idiot.

I'd be willing to bet (my entire life savings, whoooa!) that the blackhawks last year outdrew the bulls this year in Chicago.

3 times (a 9 share-NBA finals to a 3 share-NHL finals) better in tv ratings backs up what I've been saying from the get go.Congrats on hockey drawing a big number in the town of one of the teams that are playing but its fucking irrelevant to this discussion.I guess I'm the fucking retard for pointing that out.

how is comparing basketball in one city to hockey in that same city irrelevant to this discussion?

your whole point is that basketball is more popular than hockey everywhere in America. I'm giving you direct evidence that in at least one major media market, that is incorrect.

your blanket statement is 100% retarded and you're to dumb to even realize it.

Blanket statement: There is 3 times more excitement for the NBA finals over the NHL finals.

Proof: a 9 share NBA to a 3 share NHL.

Your direct evidence is jaded by the fact the city you conveniently picked just happens to be the home of one of the teams playing.Thats such a fucking dumb example its hilarious. Why not have a debate over which is better, the north or the south and then only look at poll results from Atlanta.God you're a fucking idiot.

Lets pick an arbitrary place like New York or Seattle and take a look at the tv ratings for both finals.Do you really need me to do find those ratings or do we already know what I'd find?

you do realize that the Celtics were in the finals last year, right? the bruins in the 2011 finals got better ratings than the Celtics in the 2010 finals. am I speaking fucking Spanish?

I've conceded that the NBA is more popular on the whole. but there are major sports markets where the NHL has better ratings.

Geez which would grab more eyeballs in boston? The team that won the championship 3 years ago and is old and recognized as being done or the team that hasn't won a championship in 39 years?Oh those two events are totally apples to apples. How bout what were the rating in Boston for the 2008 finals maybe? It did a 17 nationally which you'd need to put a decade of NHL finals together to equal but I can't find a rating on just bostons #'s.

NHL still on thin ice in TV game

The Boston market had great interest as expected, as did nearby Providence. Those were the top two U.S. markets in terms of fan interest with 43.4 and 25.9 TV ratings, respectively. But after that, Buffalo (10.6) was the only city that had a TV rating of at least 9.0.

There simply isn’t enough national interest in the sport to be included with the likes of football, baseball and basketball. Even Game 6 of the NBA finals soundly beat the NHL number. The final game between Miami and Dallas drew a national rating of 15.0.

Major markets.Ha.I'm sure boston is a hockey town(white) but don't give me this "it does well in other major markets" bullshit.

Goat I want you to admit that Hockey is a niche sport ala Major League Lacrosse and I will drop this subject entirely.

Because I'm an honest joe I'll report that Game 7 of the NHL outdrew the clinching game 6 of the 2008 NBA finals in Boston. This fact and the fact that it took 50 years and out of state public pressure to get Bill Russell a statue there have nothing to do with each other at all, ok?

BOSTON SETS RECORDS: The Boston market earned a 43.4 rating and a 64 share, the best overnight on record for a hockey game in Boston (dating back to 1991) and the best overnight in the Boston market featuring a Boston team in any major sports championship since Super Bowl XLII (Patriots-Giants, 55.6 on 2/3/08).

The Gold Cup final drew approximately 8.9 million viewers, besting Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in both total viewers (8.9 million to 8.5 million) and nearly equaling the final round of the U.S. Open (9 million). It beat both sporting events in the crucial 18-49 demographic.

Nail in the coffin.Niche sport.I had to actually go out to watch this because it wasn't on a "major" network like Versus.
