So all the stocks are safe 3 to 5 year investment.

Well, all I did was research the past 5 year trends on them. None of them seem to be much for long term investing. The moving average is basically a flat line. They do have volatility within the ranges they trade. So if you got lucky getting in and out at the right time you could make some.

None of them looked like anything that would interest me though.

obvioiusly BP is going to be a solid long term investment, assuming they survive this little fiasco they are in right now. I think they made about $17 billion profit last year. Assuming they kept most of it and didn't give it out in bonuses, that should cover the cleanup. I think they have spent $1 billion so far on stopping the leak.

I think the pending chance of a lawsuit and the fact that Obama is going to need a sacrificial lamb to try to save some face is going to pull BP down in the short term though. But once past that, then long term they should be right back where they are.

Flumper, would you pay off your mortgage and lose the write off given the opportunity?

I did that several years ago. That's the funny thing about write-offs. Most people just assume they are a great deal without really understanding them.

If you don't have a lot of debt, then your standard deduction is usually enough to cover anything that you could itemize anyway.

And you are really only getting back a little of the interest that you spent paying your loan. You are still money ahead either way by paying off a mortgage and forfeiting the tax writeoff.

So, yes, if you have the cash its better to pay it off and not pay the interest on the loan.

I commend you for taking advantage of it.I really do.Its smart. The moral outrage you are feigning while at the same time trying to profit off it is a little off putting though.

BP's shares have plunged almost 40 percent since the rig explosion on April 20, erasing nearly $70 billion in value.

Sounds like a great investment!
