Your personal favorite song writer
#1

I'd have to go with Kris Kristofferson. That dude writes songs that you can just picture a movie to go along with the lyrics in your head. My favorites songs of his are probably Sunday Morning Coming Down, Jody and the Kid, To Beat the Devil. $$$$

lou reed and leonard cohen lock this one up

I realise that I have a past to break with--an accumulation of inertia, wrong, foolishness, rot, junk.  A great need of clarification, of mindfulness, or rather, of no mind.  A need to return to genuine practice, right effort.  Need to push on the great doubt.  Need for the spirit.  Hang on to the clear light.

I don't like Johnny's version. It really doesn't capture the mood the way he does it.

Haggard isn't much in person. I love his songs and his voice, but he's pretty much a dullard live.

Hank Jr.'s shows are $$$

Funny thing, I didn't even know Kristopherson wrote that. I thought it was Cash's song. I was watching a special on Johnny Cash and they were interviewing Kristopherson. That's when he said that song, with Cash singing it, pretty much got him started.

How about David Allen Coe's "Would you lay with me in a field of stone" that he wrote for a 14 year old Tanya Tucker.

I hear Tanya said she and her parents were actually afraid for their lives to be in the room with him when he was pitching them that song.

I went and saw DAC last month at The Crystal Palace. It was good, but he kept mentioning his connection Kid Rock and Uncle Cracker. His concerts are like an infomercial. Shut up and sing.

Gary Stewart was a good songwriter.

Quote:Takin' me a whiskey trip
Loving her with every sip
I'm just like a sailing ship
A'waiting for the winds to blow

Whiskey, you're a friend of mine
You can blow away my mind
To some other place and time
Taking me a whiskey trip ...............

Hank III is pretty damn good too.

Quote:Well, I was rollin' by myself, went down to Memphis, Tennessee
and I was lookin' for a guy who had a mullet and no teeth
and I was trippin' on some acid a latino gave to me
Hey, I was smokin' morphine 'til it knocked me off my feet
Then I got some "H" from my old Uncle Pete
now I'm startin' to feel like I might've ODed

On an overdose of drugs, overdose of sin
I'm gonna live it to the fullest like I'm on ten
and I love gettin' high - hate bein' low
and I like to drive my truck down a muddy dirt road
and I'm workin' real hard, tryin' to get paid
'cause I'm a crazed country rebel and I'm driftin' state to state

Hank II

Quote:Woke up this morning tasting jim beam
Holding the answer to some ole boys dream
Got a bad reputation yes I’m a live wire
Like my whiskey on ice
and my women on fire

From Memphis to Mobile I’ve played all the dives
Lord knows I’m lucky just still be alive
I’m an all around rebel and I won’t be denied
Of my whiskey on Ice and my women on fire

I like my whiskey on ice and my women on fire
I like a good sounded guitar and I won’t be called a liar
Spent many long nights with a burning desire
for my whiskey on ice and my women on fire
