I suck at golf although I love the game. So I never bothered figuring out my handicap.

If you join your local Golf Association, all you have to do is enter your score at the end of each round you play and they keep a running tabulation for you. It takes around 20 rounds in order to get an established cap. They keep machines for score entry at most golf courses for tracking.
