UNC basketball signee P.J. Hairston: Duke 'couldn't spell my name right'

A recurring mistake helped him decide.

“The thing about Duke was, every time they sent me a letter, they wouldn’t spell my name right,” Hairston said. “They would have ‘T.J. Harrison’ or something like that. And I’m like, ‘OK. How can I go here? You can’t even spell my name right.’ It’s only two letters and HAIR and STON. I’m trying to figure out how that’s so hard.”

The 6-foot-4, 216-pound guard-forward played his senior season at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., and graduated Saturday. He’ll report to Chapel Hill for summer classes beginning in mid-June.

“Don’t get me wrong. Duke is a great school,” Hairston said. “It wasn’t just because they couldn’t spell my name right why I didn’t go there. I don’t feel that I’m a Duke-type player, because they have a crazy system. It’s like mechanical.

“I couldn’t see myself playing at Duke …” he said. “I realized North Carolina is where I wanted to be.”

I bet this kid realizes Duke was right and changes his name to T.J. Harrison eventually.

Ya know UNC constantly pulls higher rated players than duke.. yet duke consistently beats them and out performs them in tournaments...

I wonder if that's indicative of the players, the ranking or coaching?

Is it too late for him to undeclare for the draft?

    7. Sacramento Kings – Kemba Walker: Tyreke Evans is probably better as a two long-term. The Kings would probably prefer Knight, but Walker is an excellent consolation prize and yet another exciting puzzle piece on a roster full of them.
    -Oh Really?

    19. Charlotte Bobcats – Nolan Smith: Best available ACC player on the board. Plus the Bobcats need a point guard.
-8 are you the GM of the bobcats cause this is fucking clueless. He's never been a PG.

    20. Minnesota Timberwolves -- Jimmer Fredette: Maybe the most David Kahn pick of all time.-Crazy he drops this far.

    29. San Antonio Spurs – Kyle Singler: Incredibly intelligent, competitive forward who would kill to have the opportunity to play for Gregg Popovich.
-It's official.Staying another year cost Singler 20 draft spots and 20 to 30 million dollars. The Duke education was worth it.

This is such a weak draft.I recognize maybe 40% of the names.

I heard speculation they would take more euros this year because of the impending lockout.

I know Kyrie is gonna get paid and thats what its all about... I also know most of the teams picking in the top 5 will be there again next year.. but fuck. How do you get excited to play for cleveland, minnesoto, utah, sacremento.. ugh.

At least cleveland has two top picks...they'll be able to pair up a nice young tandem if they don't fuck it up.

The Euro's lockout thing makes sense. It would have been funny to see the Twolves get the #1 cause they would have had to taken Irving and that would be 3 guards they've taken (Flynn, Rubio) in the last few years.Rubio is averaging 8 pts in the spanish league so I heard he's starting to realize he may never play in the NBA and now he wants to come over before he plays his way out of his chance.

If I was Cleveland I'd trade that #4 for future picks.Who the fuck is this guy?

    4. Cleveland Cavaliers – Bismack Biyombo: This might raise some eyebrows, but the Cavaliers need a ready-right-now, physical specimen like Biyombo and can afford a bit of a risk with Irving already in hand.

Singler might be a homosexual. Not that theres anything wrong with it.This video surely moved him 29th to 28th in the draft maybe more if some of the new NBA stadiums include church steeples into the court design.

Interesting if not damning article about Duke pro's.You can tell that's a pro duke newspaper because it basically tries to polish a turd for 5 paragraphs.

    John Scheyer goes to Israel.

Despite being a solid shooter, a smart ball-handler and a tough competitor, his lack of athleticism was hurting his draft stock. Then, whatever stock he did have, sank when he came down with mononucleosis. He was not drafted.

He did get a shot in the Miami Heat’s summer league. Duke fans knew it was only a matter of time before he joined in as the “Big Four” (kidding).

However, he suffered a devastating eye injury that tore his retina (yummy), which needed to be reattached surgically. The last time I checked that wasn’t a good way to start one’s basketball career.
