Is that wrong?
Backstory. On tuesday night my wife and I were going to dinner for our anniversary. We were traveling on the 5 freeway in Carlsbad, CA, and we I was doing around 60. The limit is 65 but there was some traffic, and we were all slowing.
So there I am when "wooosh" a mid 90's model red BMW cuts me off on the left, almost hitting a guy in front of him. Then "woosh" a silver car cuts me off on the right. They are doing about 100. It becomes obvious in the next couple of minutes they are either racing, or it is a pretty severe case of road rage.
I commented to my wife that one of those guys was going to buy the farm, because neither seemed to be that good a driver and there was a whole lot of weaving.
About 15 seconds later the smoke and parts start flying around 8 cars in front of me. The silver car had had gotten caught on the rear of a Big Rig and got tossed like a rag after having most of the roof pulled away. He went up and embankment and then came back down. Got hit again.
So I watched the other car slow and look and then take off. I had to slow to get past the wreckage and considered rolling down the window to tell the useless fuck that I hope he would die (it was obvious at the time he was still alive).
I was so freaking pissed I tried to get close to the BMW to take down his license. California is big on road racing law and he is considered to be partially responsible.
I was already running on fumes and I had to stop to get gas, so I was unable to get his plates.
See the thing is, I was mad at them endangering my life and the lives of others for their little fuck fuck games. If my 3 year old had been in the car with me, I would have been even more angry and may have gotten out the car instead of going by the wreck, and finished the fucker off.
As it is, he did at 3 am that night, a vigil was held at the hospital by 40 family members. Apparently he was a charasmatic guy, a flirt and really loved life.
As I see it, he was a prick, and had a total disregard for others around him and who he endangered.
So I cheered a bit when he died.
They have yet to catch the BMW driver, but I called the cops and gave them a pretty good description.
So the question is, I am an asshole or what? I mean, I know I am pretty much an okay guy, but am I going to hell for wishing this jerkoff dead?

I don't think you're an asshole for cheering. Here's my take. Loss of human life is (in our culture) always tragic. However, once you get specific, in order to mourn the loss of a person we can only go on what we know of that person. Dahmer, in prison, apparantly turned into a nice guy, one of his victim's sisters became close friends with him, said he was really nice, repentant and (yes) sick, but not evil. When he got knifed the rest of the world really could only judge him and the loss of his life based on what we knew about him - he killed gat men and ate parts of their bodies. So no one really felt a loss, and a lot of people were happy.
Same thing here. All you can judge this guy on is what you know about him. He could have been a fucking preacher, but apparantly at 3AM he loses any respect for other people's lives. Even in his death he could have killed a lot of people, and he probably traumatized the big rig driver.
I say good riddance asshole, I hope the BMW gets busted.

That is a really tricky question and you will get as many answers as there is ppl with minds.
My spontanious thought is that you are not wrong.
But it's never "nice" to wish anyone dead but there are times when it fits

As a point of clarification, the accident occured at 7 PM and it was light out. The guy died 8 hours later.

Oh oops. That makes it even worse then. At least at 3 AM he could try to argue the streets are empty.

You play you pay. It is as simple as that. That idiot had it coming and thus removed himself from the gene pool. He unwittingly did society a favor with his actions. Too bad you couldn't get the other halfwit's license plate. Goodbye and good riddance in my book.

We had and have a magic quarter...Occasionally i feel the need for speed...Aust had the fastest production cars on the road in the world in the early 70s. A lot of them survive. But the new era cars and kids are scary..maybe age has me more aware of mortality...but then again if on occasion i feel like it ....Vroom.....But always alone if i take myself out ..ok ..but to be an idiot on open road with familys ...It's hard we all did it ...it's just now we have something to protect. I have lost to many friends to cheer the passing of anyone. I've seen a lot of people who taught me ...and taught me well pass and the sum total of their knowlege to be lost is astounding...so i also see the loss of potential to be as well totally astounding. For the lack of judgement for a brief time that i and most have done and walked away unscathed. We all would like to se some idiots get what they deserve ...........but death is a little permanant. Then again those that put mine in peril...get the same you gave ......Lifes funny aint it?

All I can say is wow. I too live in California and know how busy rush hour can be. It always amazes me to see these punks racing in and out of traffic with no regard to the people around them. Personally I don't think your a bad person for feeling the way you do.

I've always marvelled how it's the best-loved, most charitable, giving and caring people that get killed by illegal weapons in a drug deal gone wrong at 3AM while running from cops.
<_<

I hope they get the other moron and charge him with it ... What they did was idiotic not to mention the other lives that were put at risk . Such a tragic waste of life to prove your car is faster

it always amazes me to realize that people forget that they're behind the wheel of a multi-ton peice of steel, plastic and rubber that is being propeled at high ground speeds by a series of small explosions. in essense we all drive rolling missiles every day. and people still are careless. one less dim wit to worry about on the road.
