Imagine the thing thats put food on your families table and built a life for you is now responsible for ruining something you love dearly.

This reminds me of when the bonfire collapsed at Texas A&M. Man, that tradition had deep roots and so much support and was such a big deal to the university.

But it was dangerous as hell. I mean seriously dangerous. We had some accidents over the years but never anything that brought attention to how dangerous it was. I mean we were cutting down huge trees, so big it would take 40 or 50 guys to haul them out of the woods by hand. And then trying to load them on a flatbed, with people between the truck and the log as they tried to lift it high enough to roll it onto the bed.

Then building the stack itself. That thing was 90 feet tall. People up there on swings tied to ropes to the top of the pole. Sitting on 2x6's nailed to the pole sideways. Cutting the tops of each tier with chain saws. It was crazy. And all done while drinking beer and whiskey.

I knew the night it fell that they would never build another one. Not like the old ones anyway. I knew once the experts got involved, and saw the dangers and realized there is no real way to overcome them. And if you scaled it down to where it wasn't dangerous, no one would want to do it. Although, there was huge talk and push from people wanting to continue it, I just knew that they would never agree on a way to do it and do it safely. There was just no way to justify 12 lives for the purpose of burning a stack of wood every year. No matter how much it meant to anyone.

I kind of think this is going to end the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if there is never another well drilled in the Gulf.

I'm fine with my industry being the reason for the spill. Understand though that its human error. Someone kept drilling when all the warning signs showed to stop. Someone knew the BOPs weren't working yet kept pushing. Someone knew what the worse case scenario was but due to the fact that IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.... kept on drilling.

We will be drilling in the gulf.... it may be after the "wimps in the white house" are gone... but we will be drilling again.

Do you understand why the halt got thrown out bird?

Do you have any idea what oil produces for you that you use daily?

i am going to predict that there won't be another well drilled in the Gulf for a minimum of 2 years and may never be another one. Unless some dramatic new process is engineered that has a proven track record.

I just don't see the risk being worth it. It has nothing to do with "wimps in the whitehouse". It has to do with the factors of safety.

How much control does the US have in saying who can or cannot drill in the gulf? I mean what part of it can we control? I know that I read where BP had to "purchase" the mineral rights to drill that Horizon Well. So I guess the nations that border the gulf have some kind of treaty on who owns what.

evidently, territorial waters is 12 miles from the shore of the state or country, but there's something called exclusive economic zone that runs out to 200 miles...

there's a lot of countries and islands that border the gulf...

It seems like since the water is commingled among so many nations that they would have some type of agreement amongst the gulf countries on what they will or won't allow. And if they do have that, then it seems they are going to need to update their rules after this mess.

I understand a local judge with stocks in oil companies made a decision thats going to be repealed.

I've never disputed where our oil comes from.

From what I understand it wasnt just human error.Greed in not making the concrete pad thick enough which saved a couple hundred k supposedly played a part.Better regulation could have helped that out.The thing is we still don't know 100% what caused it.

Do you want renewable energy sources or low cost energy sources? The government has mandated that we use at least 10% of ethanol in our gas. Thats not much right? There are consequences even with that though. The dead zone in the gulf grows yearly because of the runoff from ethanol production.

We are talking about oil... something so terrible yet so great. Are you going to fly electric air planes? Solar powered planes? You do realize that most of the renewable energies are mostly based on fossil fuels..... either making the equipment, or in production and processing.

We've been talking about getting away from fossil fuels for what?... 30 years? It going to happen one day... just not real soon.

One deepwater well failed in 40 years. One.

The moratorium will not only affect me bird.. it will affect us all. Everything you eat, drink, wear, and drive or ride will go up.

They have to get this well stopped first. There is still a worst case scenario that could play out.... However, if that judge didn't over rule the moratorium then the 33 rigs in the gulf would be free to go anywhere else. They work on a pay or leave contract. They cost too much to sit idle. If the government mandated moratorium stayed in effect than they would be free to sign contracts any where... and when they leave they aren't coming back. All that judge did was bide some time to see if we can figure out what went wrong, how to fix it and if its worth drilling in deep water still. If not... then how deep is too deep....
