It's entertaining.
I neither know nor care where Calgary is, but I do wonder why their team are the "Flames"?

they play in the saddle dome. I always found that amusing.
just like their loss 12 seconds into OT last night.

The team is named after the eternal flame for MLK in Atlanta. The franchise moved and kept the name. Now their just another team who's name means nothing. Just like the Utah JAZZ, Los Angeles LAKERS, Memphis Grlizzlies!

Your explanation made more sense.A team named after the time it got burned down is weird. No different then hurricanes in carolina I guess.
I always thought Calgary had some natural gas thing to bring Flames into play but never put really that much thought into it because its next to the fucking north pole.

I genuinely believed that was actually the reason.
I've used that flames reference to disarm folks who call the game racist. Lying to get out a racial argument is always $$$

Has anyone else heard the MLK - Flames connection?

The two best things about our name:
Our rival team is the Oilers. The media has a heyday making little comments about fire and oil.
When we win a game, they immediately start playing Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.

Edmental has the cool oil rig that fires up at the start of the game. That shit is $$$$

I haven't seen that. We shoot off hundreds (?) of dollars of natural gas flame at every goal and opening of every game. You can feel the heat from the 1 second blast.

So, the Voice of the Calgary Flames is a guy named Peter Maher. He does the radio announcing of our games. His catch phrase is "YA BABY!" when the Flames win. He yelled it three times when they scored in Game 6 of the second round of the Stanley Cup play-offs in 04 to beat Detroit and win the series.
Last night, 12 seconds into overtime, the Hawks score.
Peter: Martin Havlat! Scores 12 seconds into overtime. Ah CRAP!

Well, my gas bill always seems extreme on a monthly basis. If it's not that muc hmoney to shoot off flames, I'd like one hooked up in my house for everytime the Flames score.

You could park your car in the garage with the engine running and listen to the game on the radio.

Oh for sure. And the outcome probably would've altered everything - then we could've sued the NHL!
