That was when Democrats were racist.Its sad but absolutly true but when Democrats broke away from people like governor Wallace in Alabama all those racist democrats in the south switched to being republican on the race issue alone.

I sort of thought it was because the white Democrats got fed up with the blacks taking advantage of government programs and not working and creating this segment of society that was content to collect government checks and not work.
Also the poor white Democrats gradually started accumulating some wealth. The men that came home from the wars could now send their kids to college. Along came a generation that could afford more and build some wealth. They didn't align with the Democratic ideals of getting votes from the people that needed government programs.

Do you think the Democrats who supported segregation back then were worried about welfare programs?Maybe they were worried about their money but the fact they found blacks inferior was the main platform of a Wallace type southern democrats.Those type of thought patterns do not disappear overnight and the GOP was happy to take them in for their political gain.
The fact that blacks today are nonexistent in the republican party bears out that the GOP took over the mantle of the party of racists unless you think that all blacks are on welfare and have nothing to gain from tax cuts.

Well you are talking in broad "generalizations". No I don't think that all blacks are on welfare. Obviously I know plenty of blacks that make a ton of money. I've got several in my neighborhood. I'm just saying that when you generalize "poor black voters" they are typically the ones that have lived in generation after generation that feel they are entitled to certain programs from the government.
When you generalize "poor white southern" voters, they tend to be Democratic as well. It just turns out that when you put Poor Southern Whites with Poor Blacks, you get a somewhat equal cross section of race. But when you combine wealthy blacks and wealthy whites, it doesn't look like there are any blacks in the room. Even though we both know there are some.

There are more whites on welfare then blacks but for some reason we don't stereotype them as feeling entitled to welfare for generations.Why is that?
I think its pretty obvious why rich blacks don't switch to the GOP.They are more aware of the inequities that exist between the average white american existence compared to my black brothers and sisters.If you don't believe me go to a inner city public school thats terrible and try to find one as bad in a white neighborhood.Also its not like the GOP has made any effort at all to lure in the black vote.Its too risky for them to risk losing their racist southern block of voters.Does GW get elected twice without the south?

No I'm not.I get that its unfair that we are footing the bill for most poor people but I go to those neighborhoods all the time and first of all the money we'd get out of a Mcdonalds employee working in West Philly wouldnt make a difference to our economy and number two you wouldnt for a second trade places with these people just so you wouldnt have to pay taxes.I submit you are the one who is missing the point on how lucky you are and how many advantages you have had over the average poor person from birth.You need someone to blame so you don't feel greedy for complaining.

Well, my family has been Democratic forever and still are. They all thought George Wallace was the biggest nutjob that ever came along. I think when he was running my family was supporting Hubert Humphrey. Not sure if that was the same time, but I think it was.
