Something to consider? - cLaY - 05-16-2008

I, for one, am all for it.

Quote:FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:
Gasoline prices rose to a record today – for the 8th day in a row. The AAA says the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is now $3.78. That’s a 12% increase in just the last month. $4 a gallon is clearly in sight now, and if some experts are right, it could go a lot higher.
Surveys show that drivers have been changing their habits in order to cut fuel costs. They’re doing things like shopping for cheaper gas or putting less in the tank instead of filling up. But how about slowing down?
Cars are most fuel efficient when driven between 30 mph and 60 mph. Above 65 mph, mileage drops sharply. This isn’t rocket science. If drivers are forced to slow down, we would all use less gasoline. And if demand went down, prices might just follow.
One expert says reducing highway speeds from 70 mph to 60 mph would reduce gasoline consumption between 2% and 3%. That could translate into a price reduction of as much as 10%. At today’s price, almost 38 cents a gallon.
This is exactly what happened in 1974 during the Middle East oil embargo. President Nixon and Congress imposed a national speed limit of 55 mph. Congress repealed the national speed limit law in 1995, and today there are 32 states with speed limits of 70 mph or higher. In Texas, you can even drive 80 mph on some roads.
But there doesn’t appear to be much interest in Congress for a new national speed limit. John McCain and Hillary Clinton would rather pander to voters with the idea of a three-month vacation from the 18 cents a gallon federal gas tax which will never happen. And if it did, would save drivers a whopping 70 bucks.
Here’s my question to you: Should the highway speed limit be lowered to 55 mph to conserve gasoline?

Hehh...

Here in sweden we are paying roughly $10 / gallon atm ...

And the fukkers are talking about raising it to the double within 5 years.

well around here the "gallon" is around 7.60 USD...so keep being bitchy with your communist sponsored oil.

Our countries 30 x's bigger and we don't have a rail system going to all points. We've got to have cheap gas or an alternative fuel.

I don't know.It really doesnt solve any problems and since I depend on people to ship what I sell via trucks from across the country I wonder what kind of delays that would bring to commerce. At this point I really want them to focus on alternative energy so it doesnt matter if we run out of oil.I think we can do it within 30 years and if Al Gore wasnt robbed of the election it would only be 20 years off.

There are 300 million cars in the US.There are 200 million cars in all of europe. We arent talking about apples to apples as far as whose gas should be cheaper. Our economy arguably drives the world economy and it is dependent on people being able to drive to work.I'm actually a big believer in higher gas prices here will spur development into better fuel alternatives and it is happening because SUV sales are down like 20% and most car companies have some type of hybrid cars.In the mean time though in order to keep our working class people from going broke we need to some how get opec to keep the prices reasonable.I fullly recognize that our president made this situation 10 times worse than it had to be.

Stupid idea. These are the kinds of ideas that look like they would make sense, but if you consider the big picture they are minor bandaids that really don't do anything to solve the problem. I'm totally against reducing speed limits by 15 to 20 mph on rural highways just because some biased economists thinks it will reduce fuel consumption 2%. And how he jumps to the conclusion that would result in a fuel savings of 10% sounds like a soundbite to me.

Right now fuel prices are not following any kind of supply and demand pricing. They are rising because the producers have banded together and arbitrarily decided to raise prices until they determine the point where demand tapers off. They have yet to find that magic number.

If anyone wants to propose anything to Congress, I would start with a price fixing investigation and bust up the huge oil conglomerates that are controlling the market.

The way to cotrolling the gas prices is a flat tax per gallon. With the tax as a percentage the government sees no reason to control prices. Their raking in the dough. If the tax was fixed and it was the companies making more and the gov't not getting their piece of the pie, we'd see some assistance.

I think the nations producing the oil have more to do with it than the companies selling it.Congress can't do shit about that. The President is supposed to use his office to try to keep them in line. Our president is an honorary saudi.Sad but true.

Well, to be honest, the Saudi's have pretty much fried his ass in the past 8 years. I thought, when he got elected, that he had the power to pretty much get them to do anything he wanted. Starting with 9-11 and moving through nearly everything that has happened since, the Saudi's have let his ass hang out to dry.

I look at it as he lets them do what they want. He's in the oil business just like they are.I've read this is considered the golden age for the Saudi economy.I'd like to think he's getting used but thats just not the case.

why not drive 55 voluntarily if you think that'll help your gas bills?

Anhil8tor Wrote:why not drive 55 voluntarily if you think that'll help your gas bills?

I do. Instead of taking the Interstate to work (65 mph) I take one road all the way to my office. Max speed is 45 mph, for about 75% of the commute its 30 mph. I drive pretty slow too. Tank of gas lasts 2 weeks.

Something to consider? - snarg - 05-19-2008

driving 55 would have really fucked up my x-country trip
i drove 70 or 75 and got more than 42 mpg
so fuck all you assholes
i pay about 2.50 a gallon here in mexico
get a honda civic, fuckers, or eat shit and die
