Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.

There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?

So did you guys baptise your kid or what?

BIRD33 Wrote:So did you guys baptise your kid or what?

We did. My rationale was that I didn't mind her being exposed to faith (as opposed to WANTING her exposed to it) and make her own decision about it when she is older. She'll be presented with the option of atheism/agnosticism just as much. In other words, she'll learn both sides of it.

Morality is faith hidden.

lesbians - Banana - 03-12-2008

I am in agreement with Dawkins and Rushdie on these points, respectively....

"I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world"

"I do not need the idea of God to explain the world I live in"

If people want to believe in a God, that's fine. I often wonder "why" but I'm not against it. I just don't believe.

lesbians - Jimmy - 03-12-2008

Those quotes are in direct conflict.

And if you believe it's fine, then don't make fun, yo.

They're not.The first says "the concept of God makes people feel comfortable with not understanding the world"...the second says "God isn't required to understand to the world"

The implication is that when people can't explain, they turn to God and stop searching for other answers. What happened to scientific explainations? If there are none, people again turn to God, like that is the only answer. They are content not knowing, as long as they have thier faith to fall back on. That's fine if that makes people comfortable. It doesn't give me a sense of comfort.

What exactly am I making fun of?

lesbians - BIRD33 - 03-12-2008

I agree that morality is faith hidden in a way.I went to catholic school for 12 years and do credit most of my moral fiber to the things I learned there. On the other hand I bet I could have gone to a decent school without any religious overtones with nice teachers who taught you to respect others and come out just the same.

I don't know how you're going to give your kid both sides of the equation when one side basically says don't believe any of that religious stuff because its not true.

lesbians - Jimmy - 03-12-2008

HuH? The first states that religion teaches us we cannot fully understand the world and the second implies that the idea of God helps us to understand the world.

And by calling us all immature, you're making fun.

You're right, but to her, I'm not going to push the "all religion is false" angle, and I hope Jimmy doesn't push the "it's all true." I more about giving her the option to believe differently. Children almost always adopt the religion of their parents blindly. They aren't given other options. IF she wants to be Catholic, Buddhist, atheist, whatever. I don't care, as long as she doesn't feel forced into Catholicism.

No, religion doesn't teach us that we CANNOT understand, it teaches us to be comfortable with not understanding. The second implies that the idea of God is enough understanding for people with faith. In other words, to be comfortable with not understanding - faith is enough...to ignore the scientific...to sto searching.

Where did I call you immature? I quoted George Orwell, and never said that I agreed with it. Lighten up Jimmy, if I can't make fun of religion here, where should I? At the dinner table? I think it was you who started the name calling with Pagan Douchebag. :p
