That's obviously the way it should be.

I think one thing they could do, to appease the Bowl organizers, would be to forget the homefield thing. Allow each playoff game to be played at a bowl site. So the 4 quarterfinal matchups could still be (and played at the appropriate venues) the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl, and Cotton Bowl. The semifinals could be the Rose and Fiesta, and the title game could still be the BCS Championship game. Rotate the "major" bowls so each of them gets a semifinal game every couple years, and I think everyone's happy.

The rose bowl isnt happy if its holding a first round game of Kansas vs Marshall. It would be harder than you think to change the dates of these bowl games every year.

I wouldn't want to put any of the bowls I listed in the first round. You'd need 6 bowls to rotate through the quarters and semis every year...obviously the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange would be four of them. The Cotton and Gator Bowls are pretty popular/well known, so I'm guessing those could be the other two, and would always be quarterfinal games, maybe rotating with Outback bowl or whatever else.

College Football Playoffs? - BIRD33 - 11-28-2007

It makes sense but theres to many bowls that make to much money and give to much money to the schools that play in them. When a team plays in the outback bowl they get a cash bonus.Do you pay a team every time they advance to the next round? One team is going to get paid while a smaller program is going to get screwed. You'll never get the AD's of these smaller schools to give up that cash.

I think it's inevitable that a playoff system is put in place. Maybe not for 3, 5, 10 years, whatever...but it'll happen.

When it finally does happen, the Rose Bowl will be relegated to what, #17 vs. #18? I'd imagine they'd see the writing on the wall and jump on the chance to host the national semifinals every other year.

As for the cash, I'm sure they'd find something to do with all the payout money. Maybe distribute it evenly among all 16 playoff teams, or set it up so the top 4 receive a larger portion than the other 12. Maybe distribute it evenly to each of the 11 conferences, and let them do with it what they want.

You are crazy if you think there will be a playoff in the next ten years.Ive heard sports radio people say that this year validates the BCS system because everyone including smaller programs had a shot to win the whole thing. The Rose Bowl has 100 years of history behind it with it being held on a certain day with teams from certain conferences that they arent going to give up.Its an institution that will never change. There are to many bowl games that would be relegated to an NIT type of thing if they werent included in the playoffs which would mean loss of easy money to the airforces and byu's of college football. Most of the programs that would have a vote on this thing have to much to lose and not enough to gain by going to a playoff since they realistically don't have a chance at winning the whole thing anyway.

I think a playoff is on the way. One reason is Hawaii and Boise St. The big conferences are missing a payday because these guys go undefeated. They go undefeated because no one wants to play them. Didn't Michigan back out on Hawaii this year?

College Football Playoffs? - WoolyGoat - 11-28-2007

This year validates the BCS? The number one team in the country is an UNDERDOG in it's own conference title game!

The fact is that most of the major bowl games are going to be boring/meaningless except for the teams playing and their fan bases. Who gives a fuck about Virginia Tech (or BC) vs. Kansas in the Orange Bowl? Who's gonna watch Oklahoma vs. Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl? The only intriguing games are going to be the title game and maybe LSU vs. Hawaii (and only because of the Boise State/Oklahoma game last year).

You're telling me there wouldn't be more money/viewership if the Rose Bowl was the national semifinal? Wouldn't that give an otherwise boring/meaningless matchup a much higher profile? Why wouldn't they try to duplicate the success of the Final Four?

They barely beat LA tech, San Jose St., Fresno St. and Nevada. If you have an easy schedule you should dominate if you want consideration.Don't kid yourself that Bowl officials or college coaches are to worried about a second rate hawaii team.

Those teams would go anyway...the structure proposed in the article above calls for the winners of the 11 conferences plus 5 at-large teams.

No one wants to play Hawaii or Boise State...

Oddmakers don't determine national champions so thats irrelevant.

I'm telling you the Rose Bowl makes a shit load of cash when its Michigan\USC and has no interest in changing. Its held the same week every year and has good odds already to host the national championship without a playoff system.Whats different about college football today compared to when Penn St was co national champions in the 80's?Nothing and nothing is going to change it except goverment intervention but because of the money involved it wont happen. Its just the way it is and its funny to me you guys havent accepted it.This isnt about crowning a national champion its about squeezing as much money out of the end of the college football year via bowl games on tv.Thats what the schools and networks major focus is and a playoff takes away from it.

Nobody wants to fly to Hawaii.Thats different from not wanting to play them.If they played anyone good they'd lose.Look at who they almost lost to.

The Rose Bowl will never host the national championship, because they created the "BCS National Championship Game." The Rose Bowl already loses USC/Michigan/Ohio State if they're one of the top 2 teams in the country. The Rose Bowl is praying that Mizzou beats Oklahoma so they get a USC/OSU matchup, otherwise it's Illinois and wgaf? The Rose Bowl is the only bowl holding on to their "historical matchup" or whatever, and it's only a matter of time before the NCAA realizes it shouldn't put a 3rd party's preference ahead of finding the best way to crown a champion.

I just think there's a way to work out a playoff system while including the bowl games, and figuring out the best way to work out the cash so everyone's happy.

Hawaii was sposed to play Michigan instead of App State. Michigan backed out before the season and they brought in App State...

They backed out because you'd have to do a home and home and didnt want to fly to hawaii.

College Football Playoffs? - WoolyGoat - 11-28-2007

The Big Ten is a joke anyway, weak conference and no title game.

College Football Playoffs? - BIRD33 - 11-28-2007

I heard that another reason the NCAA's won't go to a tournament system is because they feel they have no right to dictate to conferences that they must have a championship game.

When you've got institutions like Notre Dame,Historic conferences and the Rose Bowl its hard to change anything when they have more clout than the NCAA's.

College Football Playoffs? - WoolyGoat - 11-28-2007

I don't think the conferences HAVE to have a championship game, I just think it's weak (and actually hurts the teams) when there isn't one.

Ohio State went like a month and a half without playing a game before they got whooped by Florida last year, while Florida had to survive the brutal SEC schedule AND get past the conference title game. The battle tested team just battered the team that sat around and waited.

It's just a shame that money and stubbornness is hindering the process of figuring out the most effective way to determine a champion.

And Notre Dame should just suck it up and join the Big Ten or something.
