Sounds like BC might have a lot of ballroom dancing majors.Some interesting quotes.

"If there is a hybrid form of football somewhere between the NFL and college football, it is being practiced at Boston College."

But itâs the professionalization of these players that should raise some eyebrows. Just read Matt Ryanâs description of a day in his life to the Boston Globe:

"Letâs see," said Ryan with a laugh. "I did Fox Sports Net New York, I did Comcast Sports Net Philadelphia. I was on the radio in Philadelphia and Houston. I talked to a guy from the LA Times. I talked to a guy in Houston. I did âRome is Burning.â ESPN the Magazine, USA Today later on, the Sunday Globe Magazine."

Or, from ESPN.com: "The whole day, weâre hanging out, watching film, working out. I think that helps tremendously. Iâm sure thatâs part of the reason weâre in the position weâre in."

This is a student-athlete?

I wouldnt go around calling BC an example of a great academic institution that happens to have a good athletic program.It's more like a football program thats learned all the ins and outs of getting around NCAA rules to insure that their athletes don't have to work that hard.Is it illegal, no.Unethical?If the sole purpose of College is academics then definitly.I don't think its a big deal since the university is certainly benefiting money wise but you can't tout the schools academic prowress if this is going on unless you're holding yourself up to the standards of the Miami's of the world.

she's talking out of both sides of her mouth.

Matt Ryan already graduated. He completed all of his degree requirements and is taking additional classes so he's w/in NCAA rules and can use the final year of his athletic eligibility.

How does it make any sense to bash him or the other 10 or 12 starters who have also already graduated. She's ripping Ohio State and LSU for having terrible academic performance in one column, then ripping BC for graduating players on time/early because it stretches the boundaries of "student-athlete?"

I think she's giving BC it's due for having players graduate but you have to see that what they are doing isnt the normal college experience for a football player at Duke or Harvard.Taking one class on pottery when the guy on the other side of the ball is taking a full course load seems a little unfair.You said it yourself, it stretches the boundaries and because it does you can't really point to that poll with pride.

Being a student athlete should be about going to college, playing your sport, and earning your degree.

These guys put their school work in...maybe taking extra classes at one point, summer classes at another, and they graduated. With the state of college athletics (w/respect to academics) today, these guys should be applauded. And as far as I'm concerned, their "light load" as senior athletes is a reward for the hard work they put in during the rest of their college careers.

Every college athlete has the same opportunity if they want to work for it, so I don't think it's unfair at all.

I hear what you're saying and I don't think its a huge deal to stretch out your education so you can concentrate on your sport during your senior year but it does kind of twist the reason people are supposed to go to college.I don't think you get that to much at the more academic centered schools but I'm sure there is some exceptions.As far as that poll is concerned I don't think besting the Ohio St's of the world is anything to write home about.I think a fair poll would be rating admission standards along with graduation rates as well as years it takes to graduate.

Matt Ryan has a light load at BC because he graduated early. Andy Katzenmoyer (for lack of a better example) had a light load at Ohio State because he took Basket Weaving 101. You're supposed to go to college to get an education. Ryan earned his degree, then took it easy. Katzenmoyer and others take it easy from the beginning.

I'd like to see that poll with admission standards too...though among the BCS schools, BC is still in the top 5 or 10%.

I saw this in TMQ also, but didn't check the full rankings out. anyone who takes a redshirt year should be able to do what Ryan is doing, without even going to summer school. I'd like to see the rankings for all of D1, not just the BCS teams - that'd show you more of how each school stacks up
