Deputies charged a Cumberland County man with animal abuse Wednesday after he told them he used a baseball bat to kill a puppy he couldn't house-train.
Even as he was being arrested, Gerald Frank Belanger questioned the charge against him. Belanger said the four or 5-month-old puppy he beat to death was a stray, and he was tired of not being able to train the animal.When asked why he used a baseball bat, he replied, "That's all I had in my hand. I ain't got no gun."Neighbors called animal control. Belanger told them he killed the puppy with o­ne blow to the head. At first, animal abuse investigators said all they could do was issue Belanger a $100 civil citation.

In an effort to defend UNC's "stringent" academic standards regarding athletes, the News and Observer's resident Tarheel homer Robbi Pickeral has disclosed some interesting information. In her article downplaying the recent signing of Dwight Jones, a Clemson reject, Pickeral quotes the Director of Undergraduate Admissions Stephen Farmer. Farmer says that half of Butch Davis' recruits will be reviewed by the Faculty Advisory Committee of Undergraduate Admissions (the exact type of committee from Clemson that rejected Jones), when questionable athletics admissions come into play.

So what does it take to be labeled "questionable"? According to Pickeral, recruited student-athletes are referred to that committee if they score below 900 combined o­n the Critical Reading and Math portions of the SAT; score below 400 o­n any section of the SAT; score below 19 composite o­n the ACT; or have a class rank below the 50th percentile. This means 12 of Butch's recruits, out of 24, will be reviewed.

We hope this will finally dispel the myth that Carolina does things "the right way" in regards to recruiting and retention. When Jaworski Pollack, a partial qualifier, and Kevin Madden with his Washburnesque SAT can get in AND graduate as double majors, o­ne must realize that nothing is special about UNC.
